This was the last frame I shot, on a 36 exposure roll of film. Subsequently I had a phone call from the groom asking what had happened to his mother. She was standing under the arch next to her husband, the bald headed gent, ie. at the far end of the line-up.

All you can see is her black feathery hat, the vertical wall behind her, and a pad and pen in the background.
Of course, the first thing I did was to check the negative.
The negative is precisely as you see it here.

The groom said that his mother did not remove her hat at all, until several hours later.
The location was a Gloucestershire hotel dating from the 15th century.
I have since found out that it is one of the most haunted places in the whole country.
Fortunately the groom was very understanding...

Before anyone says the usual 'B*lls...' etc etc etc
This is not a gag, not a leg pull, it is absolutely genuine and I just wondered if any body else had ever experienced a similar phenomenon ?
Cheers
PS: If you've just viewed this, it's worth trawling through all the replies, remembering that the original negative is just as you see it above :suspect:

Hats off to you ;) - good story and pretty damn spooky!!!

Re. 'Popping of clogs'...I know exactly how you feel Gary...

This venue is very popular, but strangely not with me :bonk:

Really wierd, has anyone else got any freaky photos????

I wish my Mother in Law would do a disappearing act sometimes.

Sod worrying about the ghost....If it was my wedding I'd be more worried about the fact that someone went to the trouble of wrapping up a Pedal Bin in a carrier bag. Still beats a Breville Iron I guess.

She's a Vampire....or is that reflections..

ok theory 2....you're camera is dyslexic, it stole her body instead of her soul.

I'm out of theory's

if we worked on the theory that she vanished...she must have been at the party naked.

cos her hats still there so in theory the dress should be also

I'm too cynical to believe this sort of nonsense. It's a hoax or a fault with the film. oh, and the hat is at the wrong angle for the height...

Got a better detail of the 'hat' ? looks like a scratch/fault on the film to me.

A very good friend of mine - Jim Templeton took a shot in the 60's (or maybe 70s) of his daughter on burgh-by-sands marsh near Carlisle.

The problem is that there is a spaceman coming out of her head. Jim says the picture is exactly as he took it (and I must admit I totally believe him). It has been away for MANY tests, all negative. I have one of the first prints of the shot on my wall (which I feel very honoured to own). So how did the spaceman get in the shot? Who knows.

Jim has had some strange visitors turn up asking about the pic. - The truth is out there ;) sort of folk

I'm wondering if its a "male enjoys wearing ladies hats" party.

Dude front left...likes to have flowers in his hair just because.

Bloke with pint...Someone behind (wearing black - Marcel Marceau?) is leaning over bloke with pint shoulder with an aim to dump the hat on the grooms nogin.

Simple

Ivor - do behave!

She was standing next to her husband? That being the case, you could get about 4 people under that 'hat', which looks more suited to a Goth funeral than a wedding anyway.

Cynical? Moi? :D

Is it me or can any one else see a chimp like face looking into the room, from the top right of the hat.

Del.

I am not disputing it.....by any means, but the only thing I question id about the size of the hat???????????? huge!!!!!!

She's a Vampire....or is that reflections..

Traditionally reflections, although most modern interpretations take photography/videography into account. 'Ultraviolet' was an excellent series for modern day vampires /tangent

That Cumbrian spaceman photo is famous! Or at least it is to a regular reader of Fortean Times ;)

You can say what you like, it makes no difference at all to the facts.

If anybody wants to think its a hoax, fine, no problem to me.

However, it isn't a hoax, I'm sitting here looking at the neg...and if you want to come and examine it, you're welcome. Send me a PM.

There is no fault with the film which was processed by Dunns, one of the best labs in the U.K.

The post is a serious attempt to see if any body else has ever heard of a similar thing happening.

I think the first thing you need to do is post a pic of her in her hat [pressumably she appeared perfectly ok in the rest of the shots] and then tell her husband that next time he tries to wind everyone up by holding onto her hat while she ducks down..... :naughty:

well its a guess!

It doesn't look like there's room in the photo for another person, and the hat looks to big.

I've seen lots of vaguely spooky photographs, but not like this.

We're only having a bit of light hearted banter...this kinda thing is always going to promote a bit of a "your having a wind up" reaction...

I'm not making light of your thread, just saying i'm cynical and don't believe there is an unnatural explanation to this. What the scientific explanation is I don't know either.

I may take you up on your offer to view it in person. Please post or pm the town you live in.

in answer to Gary, i don't know what kind of fault, but maybe a defective neg coating or scratch. Keep in mind it's the end of the roll...

What I will say is it's an interesting photo regardless of beliefs and a good topic of conversation. Should buy a few beers over the years :)

Strange things have been known to happen to mother-in-laws.., but in this case it seems to have happened sooner, rather than later.

I've no doubt the neg will be the same. The problem is we have no real proof that mom-in-law was ever there in shot in the first place apart from the assertion of one or two people that she was, and with all that's going on there, I doubt their recollections are reliable.

This just leaves us with that curious shape which could be anything, damage on the neg, some foreign body in the processing fluid, pretty well anything. I'm not gonna be getting the ouija board out on the strength of this shot. :D

It's Darth Vader in the darkness - you can just make out his outline. What people have taken for the pen and pad is his control panel on the front.

Hi Guys,

She is supposed to be standing behind the bald guy who is behind the lady with the white hat. So the perspective would make her hat quite a lot smaller than the white hat, instead it's about twice the size.

If that is an invisible old bird, I'll eat my black hat.
