Right I have been watching this video,


Well about half way through maybe a little more he starts talking about v-flats, He shows you the lighting set up and the final result which I quite like. Now it looks to as if he is shooting straight on to the model Does this mean that the v-flats are directly behind him or is it just an illusion and he is actually standing to one side or is there more to the set up than meets the eye?

Same affect as bouncing a light off a white wall. gives a flat soft light. He will be in front of the light source.

Basically turns a small light source (small light source = hard light - usually) into a large light source (large = Soft light - usually)
 
The light wraps round him - I think that if you looked at the catch lights in the models eyes you'd see a silhouette.
