Without giving away trade secrets but feel free to do so...

Which scanner functions are worth using and which not?

Thanks all!

Haven't found much use for digital ice, cleanliness and a touch up in Photoshop suits me. Well:- I just use a supermarket dev and scan which is about 3mp for the computer screen (and it's good enough and can look very sharp) and use my V750 for better quality (less pixel breakup) for uploading for prints or for cropping...but overall am disappointed as IMHO the best scan for sharpness is equivalent to a 5-6MP in digital camera language (not much for the money).
But I'm not going to say I'm the best at scanning as I'm not going to spend ages on each frame with histograms etc and there is probably someone on the net that uses software other than Epson scan that's getting results near a drum scan erm well cough, maybe a bit more detail in the shots compared to my scans.

You can achieve fantastic things with a V750, far far beyond 5-6mp especially if you're talking about 6x6 or larger negatives.

Best results? Wet scan...you can buy the holders online I believe

I was recommended this by a hollywood celeb/ex vogue italia photographer

A scan at 2400dpi of a 6x6 negative yields an image of approximately 5400px on both sides, equates to nearly 30 megapixels - these scanners can quite comfortably scan at that resolution.

Cheers for the responses everyone!

I have always questioned everything in life and this often caused me to reinvent the wheel as I trust very little if I did not do it myself.

This is now roughly "The Wheel" S5/E7...:p

I hope to build a credible database of my own work, progress will be slow but, hey, reason to buy more toys and burn film!

As soon as I have anything sensible/credible to share I shall submit it for the consideration of all you good people!

One thing I have noticed scanning 35mm negs in the supplied carriers is that it does not scan the full neg.

It scans the full 36mm length but throws away some of the 24mm height...

Don't have scans with me now but will give more detail when I do.

Does anyone know how the supplied film area guide works? Is that used for regular bottom scans and how does the scanner know it is there or doesn't it?

Cheers everyone!

Try using the preview button without 'thumbnails' selected - you have to choose the area of scanning manually that way, but you get the full neg.

Use the better scanning holders (wet scan if you must but for anything really important I drum scan,) scan using Viewscan, create a RAW file and colour correct using Colorperfect (PS plugin)

Easy :)

Please tell me more!?

There are only two towns in this country where I would find that kind of stuff if I don't buy it online...the closer of the two would be Cape Town nearly 500 miles away...

I would imagine the software and plug-ins could be had online?

Another issue altogether is that of still not being able to scan a full neg. I did try the preview without thumbnails selected but that gives me a very dark scan...dunno why.

Maybe I should just try it anyhow since I discovered that negs scanned at 9600 dpi would not give me a thumbnail.

Once opened in Photoshop all was fine so I simply renamed them all so I new what was what.

If you include any of the white area in your selection it throws the exposure off. Had the exact problem thismorning!

Cheers everyone

Thanks for the links Big Yin!:thumbs:

Thanks beat me to it.
You may not need the betterscanning film holders if you have a good V750 out of the box, but Epson should be ashamed of the plastic film holders they send with the scanner. Do your own test to see if the neg is sharp by placing thin bits of cardboard under the neg holder, one at a time, scan, and then eventually you will see which version is the sharpest.

Vuescan and Colorneg (PS plugin, don't be put off by the rubbish website) are no brainers although I'm sure everyone will find there own best method.
