Decided I 'need' a UWA for my D7100 but now stuck on which one! Only needed for DX as no plans to go FF but looking around the 14-24 seems a waste based on price and FX compatibility which I don't need, so unless anyone tells me different choice seems to be between the 10-24 and 12-24?

Price wise the 12-24 seems to sell for around £380-400 second hand and I can pick up a 10-24 new for £520 but despite my best efforts on reading reviews on both I really can't figure out which one comes out on top for IQ, durability, usability as the pros and cons seem about equal

Really looking for someone to tell me which way to go on this, all advice much appreciated

Cheers, Nick

Nick, I hardly ever buy non Nikon lens - but I found the Sigma very good

If it helps, and you don't mind non Nikon lenses, the Tokina 11-16 is the best UWA lens for DX, great build, sharp, constant 2.8. There is a new version which is 11-20 and still constant 2.8!

I wouldn't have thought you could tell any real difference between them, I've had brilliant results from a sigma 10-20 on dx, I have a nikon 16-35 for full frame. Stopped down to f11 and printed to A3, I doubt I could tell one from the other, I'm sure that would be the same on the lenses your considering, I'd go for the 10-24 purely for the extra 2mm at the wide end.

The 11-20 doesn't seem to be available anywhere to buy yet unfortunately, also very little real world info on it so not sure quite ready to take a chance on it especially as resale values on Tokina seem very poor?

I have the 12-24mm and it's by far my most used lens and it's very good at the apertures I mainly use. I do find it slightly soft wide open at f4. If I was looking now again and knew what I know now I'd probably go with the 10-24mm for the extra 2mm or the Tokina 11-16mm for the constant 2.8 for night shooting.

I didn't have a problem with resale value on mine? Lost about £40 in 4+yrs, pretty reasonable. Well, as I say, the 11-16 is damn good and if you've got another lens to go from 17mm then the 11-20 is pretty redundant.

When I was heavily committed to DX I purchased a 12-24, I was never disappointed with it (until I sold it).

I had an early Sigma ultra-wide which did the trick but it was a physical monster. I still get scared by the Quality Control of independents - been bitten too many times.

I bought the Tokina 11- 16 to go with my 7100. It was my first ever none Nikon lens
and I was a little apprehensive when it came to clicking on the Buy button.
I needn't have worried the lens is fabulous.
From my experience with the Tokina I would now consider other non native lenses.
I bought from HDEW at a good price.

I have d300 and I have the tokina 11-16m it's brilliant IQ wise and build I don't know about resale value but if they lose value there is an easy answer to that buy a used one that way if you ever go FF won't be much of a hit although the tokina can be used on FX at 16m. But it's a great lens I gave never regretted it the only negatives are flare and after sales ain't up to much. But in my view is better than the 10-24 not the 14-24 but it's a quarter the price

Ok, everyone's comments have convinced me to give the Tokina 11-16 a try, can find it for around £300 but if anyone was considering selling then please let me know before I push the button a new one (although based upon the comments above I suspect if you own one you will keep it!)

sigma 10-20 is hard to beat

Its very easy to beat if you can afford better.

The 14-24 would be great on DX despite being an FX lens. The DX sensor will only see the sharpest centre portion of the lens, and still give an equivilent field of view of 21mm-35mm. Its also a constant F2.8 accross the range and really a sharp lens on the tests. The Sigma 10-20 really isn't.

If you want to take Landscapes buy a Sigma DP1M or even DP2M, (and merge) ........ job done for under £320

I've got the Nikon 12-24 coming up for sale if you're interested! I'm moving away from Nikon.. so all my gear is going :(

Could be although am currently weighing up Tokina 11-16 or Sigma 8-16 as other options, or even waiting on the Tokina 11-20 which could be an even better option.

OK, well decided to take a punt and ordered the new Tokina 11-20 (as managed to find someone who could get hold of it due to availability being like gold dust!!!) so fingers crossed it is as good as the 11-16 but with a little more range :)

If you don't mind me asking where did you manage to order one from? I'm thinking about making the same purchase at the moment.

Ah they do look nice :). I probably don't really need the extra 4mm compared to the 11-16mm if i'm being sensible anyway.

I def don't as I just bought a 17-55 but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet!!!! Also I guess if it doesn't work out I can always move it on, if it is as sharp as it professes to be and on one review even sharper than the 11-16 then I am sure I can find it a new home if needed and then go for the Sig 8-16 instead :)

:LOL::LOL::LOL: (very good (y) )

I was searching for some reading on UWA & this thread came up.

After clicking through the OP, it seems there are quite a few threads similarly edited. I just find it strange someone would edit their old posts & spoil threads.

Wow stalker alert!!!!

I edited a bunch of posts a while back for reasons no more sinister than I realised how uneducated I could sound or negative (I am very self critical and occasionally realise that after I have posted on issues such as image quality etc.)

I didn't realise I needed your permission to delete old posts but next time I shall ask before doing so :)

Deleting old posts just makes threads somewhat nonsensical. For example, this thread's title is simply UWAs but with the original post deleted, we have no idea what the actual question about them is. Nobody really gives a Castlemaine if you're a relative newcomer to the hobby or a seasoned pro.

Not sure whether thread disruption by editing out posts is actually against the rules or just poor manners.

Ok point taken, I am sure there are plenty of other UWA threads in the last year but I take your point.

Ultimately though if I choose to edit something I have written that's my choice, poor manners is somewhat strong considering some of the tone/content used by other posters across the forum over the years and unless I missed something I thought the Moderators controlled the forum rules not the folks like us that have the benefit of the use of said forum :)

Stalker :ROFLMAO:

Ruining old threads? Strange thing to do & definitely bad etiquette.:cautious:

I thought the Moderators controlled the forum rules....

They do. (y)
They also allow use of the classifieds if you have the minimum % level of posts in other areas. ;)

Not quite sure what the last comment is about, considering I have been here for around 5 years longer than you and have a considerable number of posts across all forums if that is some sort of 'threat' perhaps you should take it to a moderator and see what they think, otherwise, and with all due respect, please feel free to go harass someone else on an internet forum :)

take it to a moderator and see what they think,

no need for him to take it to a moderator - I came across this myself. (ETA:just checked the staff-room noticeboard, and actually you RTM'ed the thread yourself... hadn't seen that when I posted this note, but it changes my message to you not one iota.)

Please put back all your disruptive thread edits immediately. I've "reverted" the ones I could find easily, but presumably you know the threads you've gone back and sabotaged, so you can do any others I've missed.

and for your information, YES, disruptive post editing is something that we strongly dislike - there may not be a specific rule against it, since the revamp and simplification of hte rules when we crossed over to Xenforo from the previous forum software, but basically, yes, we consider wholesale removal of posts with intention to spoil threads (and lets face it, removing the first post in a thread where a question may have been asked or information given is pretty much the definition of spoiling a thread) to be disrespectful to the other members of the forum, and would therefore fall under the highlighted section of our general rules as below...

Seeing the posts that have now been re-instated I can't see anything negative or uneducated? The only thing I can see that you might possibly want to hide is where you bought the lens?

you mean THIS post ?

Only places I could find were Romania and Poland (well and http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?N=11084644&InitialSearch=yes&sts=pi but not going to get involved in Import charges etc.), luckily I have some colleagues who are able to do the necessary for me :) Will confirm when it arrives how it is, in the meantime find this nice link showing some sample images
