Hello all, I have a Canon 400D and would like to obtain a UV lens to go with the standard 18mm - 55mm and others since purchased. My question is this when I look for these lens they are quoted in sizes such as 67mm, 58mm, so which one fits my lenses?

:bang:

Stephen, if your looking for a UV filter, assuming the 400d kit lens filter thread is the same as the 450d kit lens, it's 58mm filter thread. This might be marked on the end of the lens itself, look for a 0 with a vertical bar through it, and on the inside of the lens cap.

The 18-55 is (i think) 52 mm filter thread, but as the others said, look at the lens cap and it will have the size written on it.

If you're in any doubt, take the lens with you to a decent photographic shop and ask them for a UV filter to fit it. Ask them to show you where to look for the same information on future lenses.

As people have said, look for the diameter sign - ø - followed by a number. Looking at a picture of the camera and lens on the Jessops site, if you look straight into the lens when it's mounted on the camera, it's at the lower left - 58mm. The more modern IS version of the Canon 18-55 is also a 58mm filter thread.

definatly a 58mm thread - out of curiosity why do you want a UV filter on the kit lens.
i ask because yes it may protect it but they can be had quite cheap and £35 second hard if you look hard enough. How much are you going to spend on the filter £10 for a cheapo which will probably degrade the IQ.

Both the 18-55mm (kit for 400d) and the 18-55mm IS are both 58mm. I found the same uv filters my local photography shop where selling for half the price on line. I bought mine from hoya online.

If you are getting a filter to protect an expensive lens, which one do you go for? A UV, a skylight 1A or 1B or something else?

Thank you for all the advice chaps, so which one is best?
