I have just ordered a 24-70 2.8 Nikon what would be the best filter to attach to it to keep the glass safe? ....thanks in advance:)

I am the first to admit I may not know the whys and why nots ref this subject, however, I believe there was a similar link a couple or three months ago that alot of people posted in.
I came to the conclusion that an inexpensive UV filter on the end was probably the best way to go as, after all, it is just sacrificial.

This is what i have on my glass.

Hope this helps,

why would you put cheap glass on top of expensive glass, you will be losing image quality. do some searches on here to find out what brand of UV filters are recommended. You will also find relative posts regarding cheap copy filters available from a well known auction site. stay clear of these

If you really have to use a UV filter (bearing in mind that the 24-70 is a top piece of glass), I'd recommend nothing short of something in the bracket of a B+W.

Putting some cheap filter on a top class lens is defeating the object of getting it in the first place. I understand to an extent the logic of a cheap filter, but image quality will be compromised, although if it gets chipped, then yes, it won't be as costly to replace a cheap filter for another..

Just my opinion of course :)

The 24-70 has a huge lens hood, that will not only protect the lens, it'll improve image quality, as it'll reduce flare.

With that hood you do not need a UV filter - what do you think you are protecting against?

UV filters for protection are snakeoil.

For people who have the luxury of not working in enviroments where there is flying beer, yeah.

Get at minimum of a Hoya HMC, or a Pro-1 UV filter, and it'll be fine :) They're cheap(er) on amazon atm.

If you're going to remove it before you shoot anything...surely that's what the lens cap's for?

So... that's most of us then?

Flying beer aside... what do we think we are protecting against - the 24-70 has a lens hood almost as long as the lens!
