Yes
Does anyone who has this lens use it Handheld i ask as i dont like carrying a tripod on my walks which can be a little harduous as it is without the burden of a tripod thanks...Ray:)

Yes I use my 70-200 2.8 IS handheld all of the time.

I felt it was quite heavy when I got the lens first. I guess it is definitely heavy relative to my other lenses. I've actually got used to it now however.

I use mine handheld much more than I have it on a tripod. That's the f4 non IS, so it is the lightest of them all but if you have IS then certainly and even if it's the 2.8 non IS, as long as the shutter speed is high enough it'll be fine. 200 is not really all that long in terms of introducing shake. :)

Yep, used to handhold mine 90% of the time, even though I had a Canon tripod collar for it as used to find a tripod too restrictive for this kind of focal length.

Sometimes the collar/tripod came in handy when doing compressed perspectives of landscapes in poor light, but certainly handheld in daylight, even with the f/4 limitations...

f4 IS here, only ever been used handheld so far, that was the reason for going for this one as it was so light.

Thank you all for the info/advice now i just need to make up my mind wether i want this lens or the 70-300IS:thinking::)

FWIW I just sold my 70-300 IS and got the F4L.

Not really used it in anger as it were. I mostly (outdoor) shoot sports, so picked up a TC for wildlife (extra reach when i need it only).

I have the 70-200mm F4- don't find it too heavy, though I do normally have a lowepro toploader bag with me.

Thanks everybody ive plumped for the 70-300IS i the IS and extra 100mm would suit me better:)

Exif Sub IFD

* Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 1/200 second = 0.005 second
* Lens F-Number/F-Stop = 8/1 = F8
* Exposure Program = shutter priority (4)
* ISO Speed Ratings = 400

I use mine handheld too and as long as I observe the basic rules, shutter speed = focal length etc and the lighting is good, then my results are fine.

Ok im the first to acknowledge im not the best pic taker in the world but this isnt bad i just took this outside the shop before i bought it 70-300IS that is

Nice photo, what is that bike? can't figure it out, the chassis kind of looks like a BMW, but it doesn't seem to have a boxer engine and the dry clutch suggests Ducati :thinking:

That front end looks wierd and all!

always used my 70-200 F2.8L IS handheld, full days shooting at rallies/events

Yep, it ain't that heavy.

The F4 70-200 is very light even on a 1D body. There's no need for a Monopod or Tripod unless your shooting with a very slow shutters speed.

and it is a class lens...........

I am informed its Phil Read Jnr on the unique Vyrus

I have both, and I can use either hand held without a problem on either the 50D or 40D (50D has a grip). The f4L gives better colour rendition and is definitely sharper, but there's not much wrong with the 70-300 and the additional reach is useful.
