Using Tablets to upload pictures from SDHC?

Hi, I'm new to the forum and didn't know where to post this.

I will be away travelling for up to a year - during this time I plan on taking a LOT of photo's. I will have multiple SDHC cards to fit them all on. however I want to be able to upload them all to a cloud/file deposit site and upload pics to facebook etc.

Laptops would be ideal but is too bulky for travel - so would any tablets on offer fit these requirements? I know free wifi would make uploading through my own devices slow when travelling (possibly stick to internet cafes?) but I will have a fixed residence/ own internet connection for a few months in one country.

I know this isn't really a photography question - but as a forum of photographers It'd be really helpful to know what you use to upload your photo's whilst away from home for a long time.

it should give you an idea of which tablets support usb hosting

personaly it's not the route i would take i would use a small netbook and an external drive for storage or if the H/drive in the netbook is big enough i would use that
a netbook will have proper usb so no messing with software and OTG adapter cables that might work

Ben, welcome to the forum!

You could do worse than checking out the Acer A210 (£200 on Amazon). Its got a quad core processor and a full size USB port! Just bought one for Christmas for my son and seems a nice piece of kit for the cash. Certainly runs very smoothly.

I use a Toshiba AT300 tablet myself, which takes full size SD cards which may also be of interest.

Hope thats of some help. (Both are 10" screens by the way)

Have any of you had any experience with having to upload images from your camera whilst away from home? Just wondering if how easy it was for you?

Google Drive seems pretty cool - an easy enough ways to upload all my photos to google drive from a tablet and have access to everything when I get home?

cosmicma - I would rather have a netbook too, tablets have never really appealed to me as they seem a little gimmicky. It seems you can get a netbook for not much more, I'll have a look in store to see the size differences between tablets/netbooks.
The prospect of simply plugging in a card straight to a windows OS and uploading from that is very appealing!

Welcome to TP.

I understand laptops are big, but how about a net book. I have a Samsung n150 which I take with me on holiday. It has a sd card sold so easy to load to the hd.

With cloud based backup you will also have to think about Internet connection and time it would take to upload.
 
there are other alternatives such as the epson p series multimedia storage devices or the cheaper versions of the same thing

the advantage of those kind of devices is there quite small and can be used in the field so to speak
the disadvantages is no wifi to transfer files to the internet / cloud but it is a convenient way to store your images
 
OP again, thanks for the input everyone. I think I might be leaning towards a netbook. I'm going to have a play around with tablets/netbooks and see whats best for me.

A good net connection to upload will be an issue - I'll probably upload a few at a time when I find somewhere with good connection. I'm just paranoid about losing my SD cards and the photographs being gone forever!

A little more info for anyone interested: Im travelling to New Zealand for a year with my girlfriend, but also visiting places around South-East Asia on the way there and back. We'll be living out of backpacks for the entire year so have to keep everything as portable as possible. I've even bought a Canon Powershot G15 especially for the trip, so I've got a nice little digicam to save me lugging round a DSLR. Photographing countries I will probably never visit again is one of my top priorities on the trip and I'd be gutted if I lost them.
 
Another vote for a netbook - consider an external optical read/writer as well (an extra level of backup). With memory prices still currently low, how about getting plenty of cards and keeping them full (write protected)in a case about your person (for security)? On such an extended trip, I would be tempted to create CD/DVDs and post them home as well as keeping a copy with me. Take some known and trusted blanks with you - not all are what they may be marked as...

I'm a massive fan of tablets and own several, and have owned several more, but from experience the simplest, cheapest and most reliable way is to use a netbook as other have said. You can back up on to the hard drive AND an online service giving you double redundancy. FWIW I've got a Nexus 7 with USB OTG and relevant app, and it's clumsy, but is definitely the smallest option. I've also got an Asus Transformer which has full size USB, SD slot, and HDMI out for netflix on a TV, but is an expensive option, even going for the original model used it'll likely cost you more than a refurb'd netbook. And yep, I've been using Google Drive for backups with no issues at all, but dropbox etc all work just as well as long as you can get access to an internet...

Argos is usually good for refurbs etc on ebay, we bought a Samsung NC10 back when it was the latest hot poop and it's still going strong today. They have them starting at £120 here http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Argos-Outlet/_i.html?_nkw=NETBOOK&LH_TitleDesc=1

I currently use a Ipad 1 and bought their USB adaptor for £20 also comes with SD card adaptor its work great for me as its all back up to the Icloud and they have a good 8 hours battery life

Only Issue I have found is a lot of forums are a bit behind the times regarding Tablets and their software does not allow you to upload photos hopefully this will change soon

Yep, that works for me. I just plug into my camera via the adapter and there on their way.
