If these are long exposure shots you could attempt to master the art of 'light painting' with a hand held flash by walking around and firing the flash at points in the photo where the natural light would have cast it in shadow. I've yet to try this but have seen some good examples where I'm advised patience is the key in learning the technique.

If these are not long enough exposure to hide you by you not standing still enough for you to register, then combining some flash with the ambient can only help. Using the last picture as an example, using either technique, a bit of flash fired at the seats might have brought some detail out, if thats the kind of thing you are after?

Really nice pics by the way. Nice work. Most would be satisfied with these!

You find most people use torches and long exposure to fill in the gaps but you might have colour temp issues. Flashes would work well but you'd have to control the spread of them quite well I think. To be honest I rather like these as they are, I'm not a big fan of overlit derelict photos, it tends to make them look flat. The other issue is flashes don't half give you away to security etc.

Thanks for the replies. The above photos are 9 shot +/-1EV from a normally distributed histogram

Work flow takes them from RAW's through HDR conversion, slight tonemap then into CS4 for a around 10 layers of treatment including channels, blur, overlays etc...

Just want to push the boundaries in this photography style on combining natural and carefully selected strobe light. I guess the key thing is to get out and play :)

I think that's probably the answer, but yes, I can see a couple of remote flashes adding a lot to that kind of image, with light spilling out of doorways and filling dark corners.

Looks like just the place for something fashiony, with a girl/whatever in bright colours picked out by a blast of flash. Loads of potential.

Given the kind of location, I think you'll need radio triggers (regular optical TTL triggering needs line of sight) so I'd PM FlashInThePan and get a couple of Yongnuo guns and set of RF-602 triggers. £150 the lot
