Using slider camera straps

If you delve around on the various manufacturer sites for sling straps, you will find that Nikon (IIRC) strongly recommend NOT hanging a camera body from the tripod socket!

It is designed to hold a camera upright on a tripod head.

Do you lay awake at night and wonder what would happen if you tied a camera to the back or a truck laden with concrete, and tried to pull it along with a rope attached to the tripod bush? These guys obviously did! (Prepare to be amazed :eek:)

I've never heard of a tripod bush failing with one of these straps (and there are lots of threads about it). Problems are always with the thing not being attached properly in the first place, or subsequently coming loose and unscrewing itself.

Yep, that's true with Canon as well as far as I know but my point was that if the manufacturer supplies a lens with lens points and strap then you would think that they would expect you to use that and not the Camera points.
Mind you I have heard a few people who routinely carry a 500/4 + 1 series camera via camera straps - you would think it would put a lot of strain on the lens/body mounting point. For a heavy lens myself I would sooner use the tripod foot mounting point than the Camera straps.

You are right about the problems being when the thing is not attached properly in the first place, or/and subsequently coming loose and unscrewing itself.
I followed a little trick on the BR site where you dip the rubber washer of the Fastener R-3 into water before tightening up. After carry a 300/2.8 + tc and camera for almost a year I can honestly say that the fastener did not unscrew one iota (mind you I still checked each time I went out to make sure :lol: )

Yes, I've seen that tip - just lick it first :)

I have marked my fixing bolt with felt tip so I can see at a glance if it has moved at all. But it never has - it's tight! Also, a tiny spec of BluTack acts a bit like a very mild form of Locktite - just stops the screw rotating by itself if it comes loose.

I looked at those when I was buying in Jan. The cost was astronomical by the time you added the postage and customs charges.

Ended up going for an OpTech hoping that it was a good choice as it was a similar design idea using the standard mount points. It wasn't I found it awkward in landscape and un-usable in portrait. I ended up buying a BR FastenR to use with it, which says I should have got a BR or sun sniper in the first place.

:agree: Not using the tripod bush misses the point completely.

They don't quote for postage on the website. Do the postage charges only come up when you go through the ordering process, I wonder?

I've emailed them twice with a couple of queries - no reply! It seems customer service is not high on their list of priorities......

The optech strap gets the :thumbsdown: from quite a few people!

Edit: answers own question -postage $18 (£12ish)

I have the OpTech sling strap and I like it - but I have adapted mine to use the tripod bush and one shoulder lug - using two lugs the camera didn't hang well.

this looks a right pain and must catch your face when in use even more so when using camera in potrait mode
