Using SD cards to back up?

Hi all,

Been thinking about what back-up solutions i'm using, and i've had an idea for my next school year.

Next year, i'm going to be study Music/Computing/Music Tech/Physics/Maths. And i am going to be using my laptop in school everyday. And for Music i'm going to be recording every day, and i NEED to keep all of my files safe, and as of late, i've been having issues with the computer, so its even more important to keep everything safe.

With the built in SD card reader on the Macbook, i'm thinking if i buy a few 32gb Fast SD cards, i can back up my Documents folder on the fly and leave the SD cards in the computer all the time. They barely stick out and it means that i can back up all the time.

Has anyone tried this?
 
I wouldn't. For the same money as 4 or 5 big SD cards you could add an EHD instead

Way bigger, moving parts, plus have to plug it in. I can Leave a SD Card in the laptop all the time...

I'd not bother with SD cards, you have a Mac, so the most sensible thing to do is make use of the Time Machine function.

For backup of my PhD work I do the following:

1. ~10GB of Free Dropbox storage (which syncs to all my computers)
2. 700GB of Time Machine backups.
3. USB stick a complete set of data.

I'm got a Time Machine Drive At home, which back up partial every night, and fully once a week.

The Idea with the SD cards, is that i can back-up sessions and code, everytime i work on them....
 
For a backup I wouldn't use SD cards. I've had two which the casing has delaminated recently.

OK for short term back up, but for permanent and reliable backup I'd opt for and external hard drive

Don't forget you've also got access to iCloud for backups. Although I still prefer Drop Box
