I have graduated to photographing in raw format and edit these in camera, D90. I realise this must be somewhat limited in what can be done utilising external editing software. Do other photographers still edit in camera? Should I move on to editing software, and if so, what would you recommend a limited budget bearing in mind I do not want alter essence of the photo.
Comments would be greatly appreciated.

Adobe Elements 12 will support raw files ( most .. theres a compatibility list ) and for the budget constricted is a low cost choice. plus its not tied into adobes creative cloud so doesnt need the monthly costs , its a standalone one off cost for around £49.

RAW is soooo much better, you'll be wondering why you weren't shooting it from the beginning Alan :) Just make sure you grab the RAW drivers/codecs for your camera too! :)

There are numerous free editing programs available on the net if the budget is tight.

Gimp
Photoscape
Pix Builder Studio...to name a few.

If you go on to the Adobe site, you can also download free 30 days trials of their latest software to give it a try.

It's always best to get it right in camera when shooting rather that have to 'fix' it later. That said Raw files need to be edited to get the best out of them, but obviously the better the starting image the less work you have to do later.
Once you get into editing with something like photoshop you'll be hooked I'm sorry to say, so get ready to give up your normal life, your girlfriend/wife/partner. No more walks with the dog, no more golf/fishing ect, you'll be glued to a computer for hours and hours..... But it is great fun! ;)

Thanks to all for feedback. Have also read article regarding RAW elsewhere on forum. I am getting exited!!! Thanks again.

One other thing you may try dependant on age of camera is buy older model of elements or lightroom some money you could save there

Once I moved onto raw would not like to go back with JPEG

Good luck
