I've got an old dell pc, sc something server tower machine. I need to sort it out, wipe it and stick ubuntu on it or at least wipe it. I have what I thought was the right video lead as the samsung tv I have has a pc input with the usual d type connector.

Only problem is there is nothing coming up on the display and for some annoying reason the 'pc' input on the samsung is greyed out. I don't even see the basic bios screen or anything like that.

Is it likely to be a duff lead or am I trying to do something which isn't possible?? I don't have any pc monitors around. Or other leads. I can only think of getting a pc vga to hdmi converter so it could work with hdmi which would give more options on the inputs.

Any ideas??

The pc option is greyed out for some reason on the tv... I'll try switching it over if possible before turning the pc on.

TV is 720p. No idea about graphics card.

Still no go. Even with computer off, tv has pc input greyed out in inputs list, ditto the hdmi! It's totally weird. Scart ones aren't and they have nothing connected. It makes no sense.

Looks like it is a common problem and samsung tvs are just crap for pc connectivity: http://pctvcables.com/blog/?p=13

Sometimes the different inputs have the same number on the TV and somewhere else in the menu you have to specify which input will use that number. So input 3 could be the front connector, the scart or a HDMI depending on what you set elsewhere in the setup menu. May not be the problem but worth a look.

Ooh. That might make some difference. I'll see if I can edit the inputs in any way. But it's weird as the tv was using the hdmi ok previously.
