On another thread i asked about 'missing fucus' on car shots
Bristolian kindly advised and also suggested I download NIKON ViewNX-i to show the focus point

OK - now on the image - but how do I save it back to the image folder..?

Should only be greyed out if you haven't made any changes.
If you, for example, adjust Exposure Compensation does it become active?
 
View-NXi doesn't actually put the red box on the image file so there are no changes to save - hence the greyed out. The red box is just there so you can see where the focus point wass when you tripped the shutter.
