Using nikon SB-600 Wirelessly

Is this possiblle with my D300? and if s how?

sure i have read somewhere that its possible but i may need something to go in the middle so to speak

i remember my SB-800 i just flicked into commander mode i think it was and away it went, then i sold it and now regret it lol

just wondering how you go about it and whats needed to make it work

Same sort of idea as your SB800 but the menu is a bit different on the 600 - commander mode and set the SB600 to recieve using CLS - yu lose SU-4 mode with the SB-600 *** so cant just fire it as a 'dumb' manual flash

Woohoo I've achieved geek status :woot:

SU-4 is when its just an optical flash and it fires when it sees another flash fire (for instance the builit-in one on your camera)

CLS is Nikons system that allows you to control the flash power from the camera-it too uses the built in camera flash but does preflashes before the main flash to communicate to the flash to set the flash power

SB800 can do both 'as is' - SB600 only does CLS off camera

thats ok, sounds straight forward, i am guessing i "could" use mulitple flashes in this mode to? sure the 800 has channels or something i had to set but cant remember
 
Yup - you can control up to 2 groups with a built in flash and 3 if you use a SB-800 or a SU-800 as your commander rather than the built in flash.

I really like the Nikons CLS and it works well for me.
 
:bonk: I have just been doing exactly that, sb600 and d300, off camera....errrr...you press zoom and '-' buttons at same time and hold, then click, I think mode, till it says 'on' with a squiggly arrow under it...then hold on/off button down till setting appear and make sure its set to same group and channel as is set in commander settings in camera menu....


yes, I know its vague, sorry, I am still getting my head round it, and still find the flash beeping at me for 6 seconds each time I set it up again :bonk:

Check the manual whitey, it does tell you. I do it all manually, as instructed by strobeman flash in the pan. :shrug:
 
whats a manual? :lol: mines still in the nice packet it came in

i know the 200 had options for the flash/bracketing in the menu, as far as i know the 300 is the same. not looked at either, as just wondering if they can go together

I dont, :lol:

If you have any probs PM me mate, ill walk you through it, its not much harder than with the SB800.

Once its set, you adjust all the control from the camera so its simple once in the correct mode.
 
The one of the things I liked about the SB-900 its really easy to go from Master to Slave.

I find the SB-600 nicer to use than an SB-800 generally.
 
So all you need now whitey is a Nikon SG-31R to diffuse the on camera & Bobs your uncle ..

i love the 800, whitey has my old 600, we did a swap + cash adjustment as i fancied the upgrade.

I suppose its all down to personal taste, i hate grips too, which alot of people find strange
 
Well I agree on the grip thing!

I found the SB-800 much harder to do stuff on, I don't think it ever became second nature putting in into wireless for me.

I might get an SB-900 again, I sold it as the size gave me a fright when I opened the box - its HUGE, but in hindsight it was a bit daft really.
 
yeah, i found the 900 huge when i looked at it, also quite a bit more expensive too

i think i sold that one, i had two when i had the two cameras lol

got to grips with it now i think lol.
 
Sorry for jumping in on the thread but I have an SB800 which I have been using in SU-4 mode with my Canon 40D yes canon ;) and it works well, but I have an SB600 coming soon to. I know this doesnt have SU-4 so I am planning on getting some wireless triggers for them but is it possible to trigger the SB600 from the SB800 whilst in SU-4 mode I know its unlikely but thought I'd ask anyway :)

In short...no

the only way you can activate the SB-600 off-camera is via Nikon CLS which isn't much use when you have a Canon...However, you could buy an optical trigger for it and mount it to the flash foot, set the flash to manual and fire it that way-I still have the one I used for my SB-600 before I sold it if you are interested

Thanks for clearing that up I didn't think it would work but was worth checking, as for the optical trigger thanks for the offer but Im going to buy a set of wireless triggers as I also have a Canon 430ex I'd like to be able to trigger off camera to should be fun and hopefully get some interesting results with the 3 of them probably take a while to get my head round using all 3 and getting it lit right but I am looking forward to it.
 
Its really good fun - its learning to use your camera in a whole new way again - how to control the strength of light and putting it where you want it and its a skill you can use back in your natural light camera work too - I'm still VERY much learning but its renewed my hobby for me which is great
 
Ere, are you sure you can't fire a remote sb600 by on camera flash ?

You can if you've got a nikon with commander mode but FeTTs using a Canon
 
It's a while back but, I used an sb600 with an d70, off camera using the on camera flash to fire it.
I don't think there was a commander mode on a D70, I could be wrong, I can't remember how that came about, I don't have a D70 any more..
 
D70 does have commander mode.

If you dont have a Commander mode you need an SB800, or an SU-800 to trigger the remote flash
 
I've never used a D70 but a quick google would strongly suggest that the D70/D70s does have commander mode otherwise I can't see a way to fire a SB600 off camera - an SB800 yes as it has an optical flash but not a SB600.

Know what you mean - I've got an S3 Pro and I just can't bring myself to sell it. That definately DIDN'T have Commander mode - I didnt really undstand the whole CLS thing and bought 2 spangly new SB600s to use with it - fortunately the guy at the local camera shop was very understanding when I explained I couldn't actually do what I thought I could with them and he took them back. Another very good reason for supporting your local camera shop when you can.
 
Ok, I am deep into this thread like a good book. I have a Nikon SB-600, now am I mistaken to think it will fire from a flash from my camera? I am looking into getting a wireless dealy, but I don't need it....
 
it was the link PD posted that got the D300 working, same principle

so the manual remains sealed in the box for now :lol:
 
Well I had a play and got the flash set to CH1 GROUP A then set the camera to commander mode on same channel and group and hey presto but a word of warning dont look at the SB600 to see if it works my world is now purple with black spots but slowly changing back :eek:

Had a quick look at the spec of a D80 (Not used one of those either) and it too has commander mode so yes, you can fire the SB600 off camera with it.

People either eem to like Nikons CLS system or they cant get along with it but you try it for free if you've got the right bits of kit.

i had the same problem last night lol. my problem was i wasin my room and had the flash facing the mirror :lol:

Not wirelessly but you can get a nice cheap Nikon sync cable, and do off-camera stuff nicely. I use an SB-400 off-camera with an SC-17.

Worth thinking about for cameras without Commander mode.

Its like a right of passage, like an asbo.....a badge of honour...:lol:

sealed in the bag is proof that manphoto commandment 1.- thou shalt not read the distructions.....has not been broken.
