Using my flashgun

Guys,

I have a Nikon d40, which I bought a Jessops 360AF flashgun for.

I'm happy enough with the results so far, see this thread http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=206756

But i was wondering something. When its attached to the NIkon, the flashgun adjusts the settings when in ttl mode, but my nikon shutter speed stays the same on 1/60th sec, as it does with the built in flash. Is this right. I thought as flashguns are rated to a certain sync speed, the camera might adjust shutter speed to compensate up that level?

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Colin

well i'm afraid i cant help you but i am too interested in altering exposure time on my nissin di866. again often seems to be at 1/60 even though it can be higher than that according to the info. do you have to be in manual or Tv for this to occur????

fingers crossed for the answer!!

You could try using manual or shutter priority on the camera, you would then have to adjust the flash accordingly.

The camera will adjust shutter speed if it's in aperture priority. What you have to realise is that a shutter speed of 1/60th with flash will produce MUCH sharper images than without a flash. This is because there are TWO exposures with flash photography.

What happens is the shutter opens and the flash fires capturing the main subject at about 1/10000th. If your shutter speed is set at 1/200th and you're in a dark room the part of the picture that isn't covered by flash will be dark. Why? Because the shutter speed controls the ambient light and you need a slower shutter speed to register that light...unless you plan to have the rest of the shot dark.

Thanks guys,

I have bene using Aperture priority, and tried shutter priority as well, but it still stays on 1/60th. Perhaps its best to live with the limitation and work around it. I find most things come out fine, but the odd shot is too bleached. But then I just adjust the flash manually and its fine.

Something's not right there Colin. When you're in shutter-priority or manual, the shutter speed should be whatever you have set it to

A D40 will work with a flashgun at up to 1/500, so it sounds as if you have the camera set to limit the flash sync speed to 1/60, a quick read of the manual will show you how to check/adjust this setting on your particular camera.

i agree with with graham- on my flash i have found that if i enable the high speed sync then the shutter speed goes higher than 1/60.
