Hi, I'm planning a trip to the lakes one day this week and was just writing down all the locations I'd like to visit while I'm there (mostly the usual spots that are dtd but I've not done them yet so new to me personally) and had this thought....
Rather than writing it all down, is there any way I can create a map with pin drops for all the locations I wish to visit so that I can just click on the App/website whenever I want and get directions to my point of interest from my current location?
If there isn't something out there that does this, then there needs to be for sure!!!

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Rich

I use a similar facility on my Sat Nav ( built into my Jaguar) so unsure of the type

I'm sure it could be done on a smart phone using Google Maps

There are several ways to do it.
You could by a GPS device for your camera to geotag the image as taken-expensive.
Use an Eye-Fi card that uses local wifi mac addresses to tag photos (not for raw)-unreliable.
Use your smart phone to record your route and then let software workout where you were when the photo was taken.

I use the last option. I use Viewranger app (all platforms available) to record routes. It is free but you need to pay for OS maps but will also let you save online maps for offline usage.

Viewranger is very good with your phones battery. Once the track is recorded I export as a GPX file. Then I use Geosetter (free) to match gpx interpolated data to the sidecar (check route and camera time are matched and that you are writing to raw sidecar file all done in Geosetter settings). In LR you will need to make sure metadata is re-read from file before doing any image changes.

You can do this using Google Maps:
  • Visit Google Maps and click on My Places (top left in old version), click Create Map (opens in new window)
  • Once opened, click on Create a new map
  • You can upload locations using a .csv file, spreadsheet or KML file using the Import option (top left pane) or manually using the Add marker button
  • Once you've added your points click on the Add directions button and enter the order to visit in the Directions menu on the left panel
  • Once you're finished click the Share button (top right), enter a name and/or description and an appropriate source using the 'Share link via' (I use Gmail). It will produce a link. Click on said link and open in Google Maps app.

Pink Landranger and an HB pencil.. .. ;)

Thanks peter, but it's
more route planning before taking a photo than geotagging that I was thinking.

This sounds exactly like what I'm after, I'll give it a go tomorrow.
Thanks Veedub

if it's mapping and route-planning you want then get a satnav app for your phone....you cannot rely on your phones data connection everywhere in the Lakes.

If you want mapping for when away from the car then an app such as Anquet or Memory Map along with your OS map of choice can be useful if your phone has a large screen...both have PC versions which you can use to print map portions as well. Both allow route recording, waypoint marking etc. but NOT automatic route-planning

The Viewranger app uses stored data and not phone/ gprs signal. If you want pink maps they will cost £10 (for all GB National Parks).
OS tiles at 1:50k are 60p I think. Lake district only at 1:25k is about £27. I pay £15 and can download what I want when I need to.
You can plan routes on PC or device. It will warn you if you stray off your route too.
Open maps are free and can also be stored.
I really recommend it as an app as long as you are not doing anything a bit adventurous as Phone battery can't always be trusted.

OR use Navfree which is a car based satnav, where you can add the places you want to visit and it will guide you there.

I'll use all of the following -

At home: Google MyMaps. Especially if it's stuff I may want to share with others.
Driving: Use SatNav POIs.
Walking: ViewRanger. I've been a user since my old Nokia days (2008). On the iPhone it's fantastic. I really cannot believe I have every single OS Landranger (1:50,000) and a couple of dozen OS Explorer (1:25,000) maps in my pocket!

As we are all straying off topic a bit.....

At home: Memory Map/Anquet each with whole OSGB 1K50 and 1K25 HD mapping, Bing for aerial photographic view. OS Openmaps API for access to 1K10 and 1:2500 mapping. GPSBabel for converting POIs between formats as required.
Driving: Co-pilot (if you need traffic info then google maps where available as it uses the cell data from tens of thousands of android phones moving along the roads...a good use of big-brother technology? Normal satnav like co-pilot/tomtom/sygic use trafficmaster data which is almost useless)
Walking: Paper maps (printed from Anquet as it's better than MM or OS Viewranger for that). Garmin GPS V (and whole OSGB 1K25 HD, useable with various apps on my phone, as backup).

Horses for courses...I use Memory Map as it is better than Anquet and Viewranger for most things. I use Anquet as it is better for printing maps than MM or Viewranger.
