Using Extension Tubes

Hi Guys,

Recently purchased some new Macro Tubes, nothing flash just the newer set of thee AF macro tubes, including a 36mm, 12mm and i think a 22mm tube...

I obviously know light is an issue with these as they darken the image a lot... I was just after any pointers people would advise with these.

Do you use a wider aperture to compensate for the lack of light? or are you better off using a smaller aperture to get more of the object in focus?

Any other pointers to give a beginner in using these?

I have been using my 35mm 1.8g on a 1.5crop Nikon d3300.
 
Mu advice would be to use shutter speed and iso to control your exposure and use the aperture for the artistic expression........as you would normally do for other subjects outside the macro sphere.

I've had a play this afternoon, the 35mm was trying to focus inside the lens on a 36mm filter.. Switched to the 18-55mm and it's ideal, it works well with my pringle can diffuser! Cranked the ISO down to 100, the flash on full. Works well on f11 upwards and can drop the flash down along with the Aperture for the artistic effect.
Will post pics once I get something more interesting than a dead fly!
 
I love extension tubes - I have 2 sets which means I can get almost 3:1 magnification on a sensor when used with my Canon f1.8 50mm lens.

I posted this thread some time ago and it shows what you can achieve with them.

And a 50mm f1.8 lens has enough light so that focusing is possible even at 3:1 magnification:

Just managed one of a living fly, its actually terrifying. It actually has some form of mites on its legs? I've never seen this before at all I'll get it posted in the identification post tomorrow!
