I am trying to get some nice portrait using my 430 flash on the canon 40d I have seen some cracking images as in the flash fills in the person to make them stand out nicely what the best to do this?

Try shooting in av, flash in ettl use flash exposure to get the level of flash where you want it.

That's all there is to it really, though loads more control and options depending on how far you want to take it.

One thing to note, when shooting in bright light the exposure might need to push the shutter speed above the normal x-sync speed of 1/250sec. In which case, switch on the high speed sync mode on the flash.

In fact you can pretty much leave HSS switched on permanently, and the camera will automatically switch it on/off as and when it's needed.

There's a lot more about this if you search my user name and fill-in flash, in this forum, but just switching on the E-TTL flash and shooting in Av will get you going for sure.
