Hey,

Had my birthday yesterday and got tickets to Spice Girls....haha awesome!

Anyway my mind quickly turned to taking my camera....

First question is would I get away with taking a 40D...

Second is....I'm in lower tier row F....would a 50mm prime be sufficient to get some shots? basically I thought this lens would be ideal as its the smallest lens I have and also the fastest at 1.4......my other is a 17-85 which is bulky and doesnt have the large aperture....

Any thoughts on this would be awesome...

Regards,

AJ

Contact the venue.

I e-mailed the M.E.N Arena in regards to the same thing with the Kylie concert and was given this reply.

It'll vary from venue to venue but the rules will be similar or the same. Discrimination against SLRs :(

Hi
You are only permitted to bring in standard digital cameras,no lens or other equipment is allowed.Hope this helps

Its not worth the risk of being denied entry - Basically if it has a detachable lens its not allowed as far as the MEN is concerned.

"Standard Digital Camera" - That, in my twisted world, is wooly enough to include all digital cameras that haven't been "modified" in any way (for example the addition of an aftermarket exhaust, go faster stripes etc.). Whilst I wholeheartedly agree that it's not worth the risk of missing the concert whilst debating this with the door staff (perhaps the Spicers are the exception to this thought).
It'd make an interesting debate... If you bought say a 40D with the Kit lens - this is arguably a "standard" piece of kit......... Adding Grips, LCD Protectors, etc. would make it non-standard..... (you get where I'm coming from anyweay)

Nah "Standard" digital camera by definition of what "they" mean is point and shoot - simple as.

I see where you're coming from though.

Personally, I'd leave the camera at home and just enjoy the show. Unless you're right at the front the shots won't be worth taking and what's the point in paying all that money to watch the concert through a vewifinder/LCD screen - you be as well waiting for the DVD.

Think Northernnikon hit the nail on the head, you don't want to spend your whole time looking through the viewfinder. Ditch the camera and enjoy the music

the NIA in birmingham dont let cameras in at all, from what i remember. so definetly check if you still planning to take it

Grab yourself an Olympus SP-550 UZ compact, it has 28-500mm zoom and image stabilisation :)

as above I would take ear plugs as well

The term that is generally used is 'Professional type cameras'
The venue normally has a policy in place about photographic, video and audio recording equipment. It is in place to negate any possible come backs from promoters. They are the one's who say what they want and don't want at a venue. So as a coverall the venue sets it's own policy.

I have done searches on the door at MEN since the place opened, and you still get people coming in with BIG sod of kit even tho it's normally on the tickets or conditions of entry.

Then if we get somebody in front of the pit area, that some how has got in with their kit. (plenty of ways to do it) we just tell them to put it away, but if they are pratts (most people) and keep on taking shots, we will take them and their kit to the side of the stage, explain that their kit will be taken to customer services (they accompany us) they will be given a reciept and told they can collect it at the end of the show. Or they can just go straight out of the venue and have no access to the show/event.
Believe me it's better us getting a hold of it rather than some of the artists own personel security. At events across the world I have seen this done and kit just smashed there and then, and they will probably have you lobbed out anyway!!

I have been doing this for about 20years, from small provicial theaters to arenas with 160,000 people in.

Saved a few togs lifes when I have found their lost CF card with all their shots of the show on, also ended up in Kerrang once in a full A4 spread, the only problem was the angle the pic was taken, made me look like I was about to lamp the lead singer from a band, but I was about to grab an idiot that had ust jumped the barrier.
