Hi all
Been scouring used sections ,trying to find a decent used tripod
Prices vary greatly as do new prices
Currently using a aluminimum manfrotto from around the dark ages
It's absolutely solid but weighs a ton
Now it's getting a bit colder ,I'm prising my hands of it after carrying it for a while
Anyone used or currently using the manfrotto 290xtra carbon
Prices seem reasonable ,and some decent reveiws
Thanks
Ian

I used to have the 055prob4 carbon fibre tripod, and before that the aluminium version. The main reason for changing from the aluminium version to the carbon fibre version was reduced weight. I've never found the coldness of aluminium a problem, if it's cold enough for aluminium to get cold I will be wearing gloves.

The 290 tripod is smaller and is a good lightweight option depending on your camera and lenses.

Don't know what gear you are using but keep an eye on FleaBay for Gitzo tripods. You can often find them going cheap. A good (used) Gitzo 2 series will be much lighter and significantly more rigid than any Manfrotto 055 series. There is nothing going at sensible prices at the moment (just checked) but they do come up.
I bought my Gitzo Traveller for £140 there and a few days ago there were a couple of Mountaineers going for under £200. Remember Gitzo tripods are designed to last and even a heavily used one that is a couple of decades old is still one of the best that you can get.

Occasionally the Feisol Tournament tripods turn up used. They are very light, but still decently rigid - well worth a look.

Happy hunting.

If the weight is not a problem and its just the cold, I would just wrap one leg. Road bike handle bar tape is what I would use.

Water pipe foam lagging is good, fastened with cable ties.

"I bought my Gitzo Traveller for £140 there and a few days ago" Sorry that should have read months not days!

What about a £20 bag from ebay and carry the bag. Camera is screwed on a plate which snaps in the head which is attached to the tripod which is in the bag. If you can carry the weight I don't see why you fall over on how you hold the tripod and therefore it being cold. Sorry if I missed the point.

Think I just snapped in the head reading that, bit of foam pipe insulation does the job, but lets be honest CF just looks the business
