Used Nikon 600mm f/4 AF-S II non-VR - what's a fair price?

Hi all,

Need a bit of advice from the experts :)

I'm looking to purchase a secondhand Nikon 600mm f/4 AF-S II lens (non VR version) which is in perfect optical condition (tiny amount of dust but nothing shocking or image altering) and cosmetically has a couple of scruffs on the barrel, again at worst maybe 8/10.

What sort of price would be fair for such a unit? Obviously without pictures and suchlike it's hard to make price so listing a rough range is absolutely fine. Usual stuff is included (hood, trunk case (in pristine condition), ND filter and cloth cover).

Asking mainly to make sure I'm not getting taken for a ride.

About £4k in the condition you describe, maybe more...

Buy a used 300mm 2.8 and the new 2 x converter. Works great and still only 5.6. You would have vr also.
These were shot with that set up: Remove the converter and you've got 300mm 2.8!

Lovely pictures Kev, I especially like the afterburners.

Never realised that the 2x teleconvertor can produce such images, I was under the impression that the 1.4 was about the limit for high quality pin sharp shots.

Do you have any other shots (wildlife specifically) with that combo? As it is tempting given that it's much easier to hand-hold than the 600mm.

I'd be interested to know how one arrives at a fair price for a lens like this (and other similar lenses such as 500mm, 400mm f/2/8 etc). They crop up on the used market very infrequently, probably because somebody who's plonked down £5k+ to buy one probably had a very good reason for doing so. So in my experience it's very difficult to work out what the "going rate" should be. Ideas, anyone?
 
I get a " fair price " by looking at for sale threads from now, the past and from various sources. This may however not be a fair price but more an avarage price for a larger lens. Going by what your saying and not actually seeing the item then around the 4k marks seems reasonable.I did loads of price sourcing earlier this year when buying a used 500 AFS.

I'm sorry I haven't any wildlife shots with it yet. Been too busy shooting fast jets.
But my train of thought is that it focuses fast enough for those, so it should work well with wildlife.
But here's a couple more, but larger size..

That second shot was a flypast at a good speed..

I really do rate the combo. ;)
