I've just purchased a used Canon 400D and connected it to my pc to check on the shutter count with EOSINFO. The program shows the correct camera and the correct serial number, but the shutter count shows as 0.

Is it possible that the previous owner could have reset it, or is it likely to be a fault with the program?

I have no other problems with the camera at all, am just curious on the shutter count.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Is there anyway of finding the shutter count on a 400D?

EOS info doesnt work on it.
There is dedicated servicing software for pretty much all the Canons, its a separate software for each model such as 300d, 350d, 400d, 450d etc but its for repair centres, we use it for diagnostics, shutter count, checking and clearing error codes and other fun stuff but each software costs about twice the cost of a camera.

If the image count has been set to continuous, this will give a rough estimate of actuations, but only rough!

Just checked, it is set as continuous, so i'll go by that. Thanks

That will depend greatly on you or the original owner not having other cameras which used the same cards.

IIRC if you take a card from one camera to another the file number just keeps going up.

So if I take a card from my bag and put it into a brand new camera I instantly have 40,000 shots:thinking: on it, if I I then shoot 1000 shots on that card and put it back into one of my older cameras, that camera now has 41,000 shots:thinking:.

When you have multiple cameras, and swap cards about, they all appear to have a similar number of actuations (according to the file numbers).

All it takes is for the camera to have been borrowed by someone like me for an afternoon - or even for a quick test, and the actuation count from the file number would be wildly out.

Checking the shutter count on continuous mode is not reliable at all as the counter resets at 10 000

Just interested but why does it matter
I picked a 400D up for about £125 over two years ago, specifically for macro stuff. It's still going strong. :)
Resetting the counter to zero wouldn't be too smart either.
