Yes
what happens when they reach their limit ?

do they just lock up ?

how much to repair ?

is it just not worth looking at ones with high shutter counts ?

I'm after a 5D1 or 1Ds1 and want to be able to sell it again after a year or so

expected life of the shutter is just that, expected. they do not get to the expected number and lock up, some will fail before that and some will carry on way past that number. iirc it is £2-300 to get a shutter replaced.

I have very well used film slr's that have had countless shutter activations and are still 100%...The paranoid reaction to digital shutter counts is way over the top...

I think what you need to consider is a camera with a low shutter count is probably going to show less wear and will possibly be in a better cosmetic state than a camera with a high count.
Focusing screens, mirrors and sensors could also be in better un touched condition.
bit like buying a 2006 Ford Focus and finding 2 one with 20k miles the other with 80k.
Which would you prefer?

I'd rather have an 80k Focus with a full history, that's been well cared for than a 20k one that's been hammered by a boy racer, or worse used for 2 miles a day on the school run.....;)

My wife's car was a 2001 model with 18,000 on the clock - it was still pretty beat up! (beaten to it by FITP who described my wife's car perfectly)

I've a 1Dmkii with over 150,000 activations and I am always tempted to swap it for a less used one - but for the moment it is working fine and there is nothing to say that a newer model with 40,000 won't break at 41,000 either.

i had a 40d that had the shutter die after 50,000 clicks, it really is a random thing. that's why wedding shooters carry 2 bodies, because it could really happen any time. i've heard of 1d bodies going after 20k and some having 300k without a problem.

its not like they explode once they hit that magic limit, but you should be aware that they can explode sooner.

puddleducks gonna go mad when he sees this thread!

Is there any easy way to find out the total shutter releases for your body?

There are a number of freeware applications that can be downloaded that will give you an accurate count; I've got one on my PC at home which has reliably provided me with the amount of shutter actuations on a few cameras. Unfortunately, can't for the life of me remember what it's called, so will have to post the name of it later this evening. In the meantime just google; you're bound to come up with something.

Totally agree, ex lease car with full history, my last company car when its lease ran out was 3.5 years old 130k miles on the clock was serviced every 3 months an if anything needed doing it was just done. it was a renault grand scenic sold for about £4k iirc what a bargain.

I brought a second hand d200 that was a pro togs second camera had a few wear marks where strap eyelets rubbed and that sort of thing, rubber on peeling a little, I would havegiven it 7-8 out of 10, got it for a good price, when I got home and checked it out it had done less than 2k actuations. shutter life is overdone in digital, imho, you never had these worries with film cameras, and what is the difference?

Cheers! Would be useful to keep count on the 450D and the 7D.

Let me know if you or anyone can recommend a particular app. There seem to be a few trials around but not sure which is the best one to install.

I've got a 10D which must be in excess of 150k clicks - it's a tank.
a 40D on about 60k
and a 1D2 with 160k (shutter was replaced at 150ishk) - total cost for the work was about £300 parts and labour.

Cheers! EOSInfo is great.

30,453 in a little over 2 years....not too bad.

The difference is that with digital, some people employ the machine gun method and take as many shots as they can and select the best one later so for every shot they would have taken with film, they may take ten shots now.

Result = a tenth of the shutter life.

Just to prove my point, if that was film it would be around 1000 rolls - in two years. I don't expect I will use 1000 rolls of film if I live to be a hundred!

Steve.

Who in their right mind would want to buy a Dagenham Dustbin anyway? (re post 5) I have had nothing but problems with that make.

hm, EosInfo doesn't seem to recognise my 7D. It says there's no camera connected. Might be drivers I guess, will try again when I get home.

Anyone tried to use this app on a recent body?
