After having a conversation with Damien the other day (Slimbert on here) I thought I would test out my camera to see how much I could push the ISO before it becomes too much of a noticable problem.

All the images below were taken this morning in front room with natural light through the windows. (Well where else would it come from.)

Pentax K20d, with a Sigma 17-70 f2.8-f4.5 , at f2.8 and 17mm. Hand held. AV setting for all.

The only processing that has been done is to resize the jpeg file to forum regulations.

1. ISO 1600 1/30s, no in camera ISO noise reduction

2. ISO 1600 1/20s, in camera ISO NR.

iz3.jpg

3. ISO 3200 1/50s, no in camera ISO noise reduction

iz4.jpg

4. ISO 3200 1/30s, in camera ISO NR.

Although the K20D has ISO100-3200 there is an option in the menu to expand to 6400

5. ISO 6400 1/60s in camera ISO NR.

Comments appreciated. I know not the best composition, etc etc, but these are just test images.

NO 4 Looks like a wokable image at such a high iso imho

cheers,

might have a play at a later date to see what (if anything) noise reduction stuff can do, be it photoshop or noise ninja or something....

Pretty happy with the noise in that one myself, given first DSLR got a bit noisy at 800.. (Pentax K-m)....

Obviously lens wide open helps (I guess) and in a fairly bright room....

will have to try again in a darker environment......

They look sharp to me. Very high iso is definitely useable unless you want to do really big prints.

You don't tend to look at really big prints close up - so I wouldn't worry too much about noise on large prints - it is much less noticeable on prints than it is on screen anyway.

cheers guys, don't think I will push it much past 1600, but up until now have pretty much always been in the ISO 100 on a tripod end of the scale.....

Glad to know that 1600 is usable....

looks fine to me, I only really see hight iso noise a main problem if you crop in too much

I think you need a low light test to see the ISO effects in the dark areas particularly in the blacks. These look good!

Totally agree. In good (or reasonable) light then the effects of noise are less than in low light, that's where the real test is.

Saying that you are already down to 1/30 or 1/20 so it's certainly not an unreasonable test.

I'd draw the line at 3200 on the pics you posted here but 3200 should be easily recoverable using NR software. 6400 is getting a bit noisy. :)

"Usable" - you capture the only shot of Elvis, Bin Laden and Michael Jackson flying with ET over the top of the Empire State building at ISO 128000. Its slightly OOF, there is some lens flare and the colour balance is a bit off whack.... is it still usable?

The key to shooting at high ISOs is nailing the exposure, if you underexpose and then have to rescue it noise quickly looks nasty. Get the exposure right and the noise is nothing to worry about. I regularly use ISO2500, 3200 at weddings. I shot an entire ceremony at ISO5000 the other day, although I wouldn't recommend it.

 ....... are you trying to tell us something?

Yes, that too much emphasis is placed on technical perfection when the content should be what its all about... either that or I am a very rich man indeed, but I cannot show you my picture because someone paid a fortune for it.

swop you cameras...all look better than my shots at times

Nice overquote!

Better than I would have expected, given me confidence to try mine at higher ISO settings handholding :)

Remembered this thread and thought I would post after todays play lol...

I was playing with Kites today and scared of using a high ISO but tried a couple at 3200ISO 1/1600 handheld, was very happy with the results :D
