Yes
Is it possible to get a cable which is Micro USB 3 Type-B to Micro USB Type-B?

In other words with these connections at either end?

Maplins list over 400 types of computer cables I think the one you want is R58UE but please check I'm not 100% sure.

that seems to be USB-C on one end rather than micro b.
Yes you may well be correct which is why I advised checking, I just had a quick look while looking for something else on there website
there are too many listed for me to have time to though them all.

Aye that was usb c which almost caught me out this afternoon.

Trying to connect an external hard drive to an android tablet. Is that even possible?

A standard micro USB cable will fit into a USB3 port, it just uses half the USB3 socket.

you'll probably need an OTG adapter then you can plug it straight in with the USB-A connector.

however the USB device needs to be low powered (i.e. a USB stick or SSD) or have it's own mains power. otherwise the tablet wont power it.

Ah I forgot about power! It's to watch movies that I've converted from dvd to the external drive (not an SSD one).

So can you plug a micro USB2 B cable into a Micro USB3 B port?

You're going to want an otg cable for the tablet then just use the normal USB cable for the drive. You can get them pretty cheap online for a few quid.

But like I say depends on the power draw of the drive. The tablet may not power it (at least for very long if it's a mechanical disk that needs to keep spinning). If possible I'd say get the otg anyway and put the videos on a USB flash drive, that way you won't need to worry about power draw or battery life .

Thanks, I think I'll just load up the tablet and a 64GB card as I'll get plenty of films on it.

You would be better as Neil says with a big cheap flash drive and an OTG adapter.

Cheers, I've decided to load up a few 32GB cards as it will hopefully be better for the battery.
