We are going on holiday soon, and I have been looking around for a cheap laptop to use purely as a back up device.

today i nipped into pc world (was actually looking to see how much mem card readers were), and saw a little device, for conecting one usb device to another (eg camera to a usb external hard drive)

Came home and thought i woudl do a little research, to see if they are reliable.

But now I cant remember what it was called, does any body know what this technology is called so I can search for it on the net please (or I will have to try and remember to nip in again on my way home from work)

thank you

spot on, that was exactly the one

hyas any body used one, and are they reliable?

Sorry can't help with reliability - I use my laptop for storage/backup when I'm away from home.

thanks again guys

seems they are reliable when used with athe main power source but not so on batteries (that shouldnt be a problem)

bit slow, but again that isnt a problem.

I think that will be the answer to my problem, and certainly cheaper that the low level laptops I was looking at on ebay (around £150 with postage seemed to be the average)

Hi there.

Don't know if you are interested, but in the classified section, I have this fo sale .....

http://www.smartdisk.com/eweb/smartdiskus/www/staticpages/FlashtraxXT.asp

It's pretty small, has a good 40gig hdd. Reads directly from Compact Flash and SD cards and works well off the included rechargeable batteries.

I'm looking for around £90 incl p&p.

Let me know if you're interested at all or have any questions.

If it's not the type of thing you're after, please accpet my apologies for jumping into this post!

Thanks.

Anth.

thanks for the offer m8, I am going to get the usb anywhere, I already have a spare hard drive and a usb hdd caddy, so im half way there already :)

My personal experience with Belkin products has not been good, poor quality control v high price.

i bought it and tested it,

1st off, the instruction manual is awfull
I descovered by trial and error, the hard drive has to be Fat32 format, which means that the hard drive has to be 32gig or less, effectively, because I am pretty certain that the belkin wont be clever enough to negotiate between multiple partitions.

Personly that isnt a problem, I have a 12 gig and a 40 gig hard drive i can use for it. Dont think I am likely to be away from a computer long enough to need more than 44gig (remember I will have to reduce the 40 gig down to 32 gig for the sake of fat32)

2ndly it is very slow, 101 test pictures took about 10 minutes to transfer, but that isnt the end of the world, I wouldnt want to have to rely on it in a time sensitive moment.

Price wise the belkin cost 14.99 from PC world and the USB 3.5" hard drive caddy was 13.50. ( I had the hard drives already, but a 40 gig would probably cost about £25)

The solution cost me less than £30 which is pretty well priced
