I recently bought a new 16" MacBook Pro, which comes with 3 USB-C sockets (and of course, no USB adapters). Cleverly (or not) I bought 3 adapters from Apple at the same time at what I now discover is a swinging price (nearly £20 each). I now realise that one adapter per port isn't so smart; it would be better to have one adapter per device. That would mean at least another 3 adapters. A quick search on fleabay (ignoring the rain forest company as best I can) shows lots of quite cheap (£2-£3-ish) stubby adapters of the right kind, which would probably be useful. However, I wondered if anyone had any experience with these. The 3 adapters would go on a couple of portable HDDs and a DVD-writer... oh, and another one for the second scanner!

Basically, anything to know or avoid with these cheap devices? Thanks

You can buy USB-C hubs with multiple USB-A ports if that is what you mean, £15-£20 on amazon, you can get them with wired Ethernet ports, card readers, and all sorts.

The stubby adapters work well I’m my experience. As above getting a hub might be a better idea. They also work well.

Yes, one of those is the most versatile option. Personally, I like to be able to use a hardwired network connection if one is available, so I'd go for one which has an Ethernet port.

HDMI and SD card slots are less essential with the current generation of MacBook Pros than they have been for a few years, but it's useful to have an alternative to the built in slots.

Hubs like these has a USB-C ports for data, and, more importantly, for power, which can help with some devices that might draw more current than your MacBook can provide through the hub; and also provide you with a pass-through to power your MacBook Pro if that is ever needed.

Thanks for the comments, folks. I don't need a hub as I have plenty of ports for what I need at any one time. I just need to plug a range of things in from time to time, and it's going to be a pain to keep swapping the existing adapters from device to device. The MBP sits on my desk much of the time, but also goes on the move with my, so I don't want adapters hanging off the sides then. That's why I decided that a mini adapter on each device would be a good idea. That means (for example) that I won't turn up at the remote site where I keep one of my backup disks, to find I can't plug it in!

But I'm taking comfort from @TimHughes ' comment above that the stubby adapters work well for him.

Clearly new stuff I buy will have male USB-C cables on it!
