Yes
I don't know if anyone else has experimented with looking at Photo forums in the USA.
I had a look at one today. www.thephotoforum.com

I found their style really quite dreary. I enjoy the banter and witty comments that I read on Talk Photography and thought that they might be similar.

They are not. They haven't got a sense of humour. Anyone found the same.

No where is as good as here - Fact! :p

EDIT - and to answer your question, yeah I have found other photography forums, both US and UK ones to be quite dull humorless places. Then again, that problem did let them avoid Michael Jackson jokes!

One thing I noticed straight away I hit the link for photo gallery online its an ad so they get paid off google a bit miss leading and a bit of a cheat of advertisers I think, the most part above the fold are ads, what a rip off, wonder how many other folks fall for that, good for making revenue for them though

To be fair to them, it does say registered users don't see the ads :)

Why are you looking at other forums :bat:

Looking at other forums just to be nosey actually. I wanted to see the style of photography that is popular in the USA. I was disappointed or perhaps pleased that what I found was that they don't appear to be as creative nor technically adept as many of the photographers here. I think you all deserve a pat on the back and I think we should have a photography event in the 2012 Olympics to show them how its done!

I was not being serious...........one of the reasons, as you say, "the banter is good on here"

Edit, better add a smiley or two :):D

Honestly though, I like it here even though I can't take a picture to save my life - I'll be back!

i'm not a massive fan of Americans "period"
several bad experiences forum wise as an employee and a visitor, the lack of humour and constant weapons fetish seems to be my biggest bug bear, coupled with removing any skin imperfection on any photo.
A good mix of talent levels here and a good sense of humour too.

Americans have a very dry, wicked sense of humour, it's different to ours and a lot of people don't get it.

Yes, I joined one that related to a specific make of camera. Only made a couple of posts then abandoned it.
Seemed to be full of people spoiling for a fight.

This is the best internet forum I have found.

Personally the american dominated forums do my head in.

Most such as POTN are full of unhelpful trolls, and if you post anything but 'kids playing softball' in the sports section for example no one posts.

amusingly despite having many more members, the technical knowlege/help here seems superior. I mean i posted a thread saying a lens wasnt focussing on AF/MF anyone have ideas and someone said he wouldnt help before seeing pics.. I mean erm whats it going to show a lens? lol!

It's true...once they get past the irony inherent in our humour and once we get past the 'God, Guns and George W. Bush-Lovers' from anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon Line, they're fine...
I go on a lot of US Car forums and have never had a really bad experience there...
I just have to learn not to bite whenever foreign policy is mentioned...
I've even managed to stop dead a few Obama-bashing threads...for some reason a lot of rednecks seem to regard him as the anti-christ...

No problem looking at other forums especially for specialist advice...

I am into panoramas and amongst others, use Max Lyons one and the nodal Ninja one. but don't expect banter, It is all serious stuff and answers to problems.

For extreme banter... The lounge on the Amateur photographer site take some beating,
But it is a little cliquey and very close to the limit at times.

For a wide coverage of topics and lots of chat and advice, nothing beats this one.

As I am a film photographer, I often visit APUG (Analog Photograohy Users' Group).

It is run by an American who lives in New Zealand. Mainly American membership but I would estimate about 20% non-American. Of that, mainly UK members.

It is a great resource for film photography. I rate it highly enough that it is the only forum which I pay to become a subscriber rather than just a member.

Steve.
