US cars (rental) choices

We had a Kia when in America and TBH it changed my opinion on them. I would never have considered buying one, but the one we had was ok. Not sure what it was, not a model you can get in this country. About the size of an Insignia I guess. Auto box was hideous though, put your foot down on the freeway and it would go from 6th to 3rd and rev itself to death. Was also quite slow at changing gear

It was surprisingly comfortable and easy to drive though.

the auto box  It was a real mystery and a cause for anger until I pulled it left and it became a nice clutch-less manual car. Fast gear changes and the way it had to be - not 2nd or 6th without any sense. I now actually hate having to use clutch.
All of the above is mapping problem. They could even fix with software update, but I wonder if they ever will

I would like to try EU version, but personally will stick with VAG cars for the near future.

2.5L petrol? What SUV was that? Was it a little Jeep or something?

A Charger isn't exactly a tiny compact, it's a full size 'sedan' with a lot of space and a 3.6ltr V6. It's not a Suburban i'll give you that, but it's far from a compact.

Next time i'm in the US (i'm usually there each year, and have driven over 11,000 miles there in the last 2 years), i will probably get a big SUV/Pickup. Mainly because the normal cars are difficult to offroad. I know you're not meant to offroad rentals, but you kind of have to if you're in national parks!

Do remember that US MPG is not the same as UK MPG... given that gallons are not the same.

One of the fun things about the US is you can rent ~400bhp cars for cheap. I've had the Challenger R/T and Corvette so far, and they are good fun :D

See this re driving in US National Parks.

Some of the roads there do meet off-road description in my mind. The one 100m stretch to car park was a muddy gravel 20% incline with a number of twists :cuckoo:

Realistically I would have been pretty stuck with regular car a couple of times.

P.S. They do consider a "full size" sedan to be a small car. I had not seen anything smaller up there. Majority ones were enormous pickups totally absent from UK roads (and for a good reason).

I live in the U.S and I have been in the auto industry for over 20 year. If you give some details of what you are looking for I'm sure I can point you to the right unit. Don't believe the nonsense of you can only get this or that. You can rent anything you want here. So what is it that you want?
