URGENT will this lens auto focus work on a d60??

Hi Karl
I have a 4 to 5 year old version of that lens and no it does not have a motor and will
not focus on the d60, after looking at the on the nett only the more recent models have
a motor so you would need to check which models it is.
Hope this helps

regards

Gary

this is the lens

That screw looking thing at 11 o clock position on the base of the lens is where the screw drive in the camera connects to the focus system somi would day nonit won't focus or that wouldn't be there

Nope, with Sigma lenses you need to see the letters HSM.

That's not strictly true. This lens will AF on a D60.

Edit - Just for clarification, I've used this lens on my old D60 last year, plus Sigma confirm that it will work.

Loads of confusing advice here.

The Sigma 70-300 APO lens in the picture will not autofocus on a D60 because, as Dave pointed out, it has the screw drive connection.

There is however a more recent version of this lens with a built in focus motor. There is AFAIK no way of telling which is which other than looking for the screw drive connector (or lack of). The box will say "motorised focus version" or similar, but "HSM" will not appear on it as it does not have a "hypersonic" focus motor as the higher end Sigmas do. This version will AF on the D60.

If it doesn't say HSM it will not autofocus with the D60

You can clearly see the screw that means it is driven from the body

THe later HSM models will autofocus.

This is where the confusion lies. Sigma have non HSM lenses that have micro motors inside, so they will autofocus on non motor bodies. They however dont have a lettering system for it and its not always obvious on the lens or box.

Stuart, they never made a HSM version of this lens. Look at the link I posted above, it gives a whole list of lenses that are compatible with the D60, all of them have HSM at the end apart from the 18-200 and the 70-300, yet they're still compatible.

I have used that very lens above with a D60 and it worked fine.

someones right and someones wrong? Some say it will, some say it won't ... but who's right?

There's only one way to find out

FIGHT!!!!!!!

You may as well take it to a camera shop and ask to try it with a D3000/D5000 to see if it works (Not sure if the new D3100 has a motor or not), then you'll know one way or another.

I have one and it autofocuses on my D60 BUT I believe there are ones that won't. I went through this when I obtained mine, and couldn't find any obvious way of telling. Mine doesn't say HSM.

Interesting

I have never come across a lens with in built motors and the abilty to be driven from the body. if that is the case surley there must be some sort of clutch switch otherwise you would risk the motors working against each other or stripping the cogs?

For the record the 70-300mm was the first lens I bought for my D60 and it was manual foucs only.

Of course, now I have a D200 I don't need my AFS lens, so if you bought it and it didn't work... :naughty:

As I said before, not all Sigma lenses with built in focus motors have a HSM (hypersonic) type focus motor. The motorised AF motor 70-300 is one of these. It has a focus motor that is slower and noisier (and cheaper) than the HSM types. This is why it is not designated HSM, but will still AF on D40/x/60/3000/3100/5000.
