I am going on holiday in the next week to Greece, I have a Canon 40D and i am looking to take a few night shots, I have a monopod which i am taking but my velbone d600 is too heavy for the luggage, i am looking for a tripod to support my 40d must be quite cheap and doesnt have to be tall any suggestions

Budget as least as possible say around £25 quid max its really for holiday only

Think Jessops do one of their own for around that price

I'd suggest that you be very carefull buying a really cheap tripod - some of them can't take the weight of an SLR, with disastrous consequences. I speak from experience having had my cheapo fall over. I'd suggest something like this Giottos It's a proper tripod and absolutely brilliant, top quality and can't be faulted. Avides deliver within a couple of days too. The disadvantage is that you would need to buy a ballhead to go with it. That would take you over your budget obviously, but means that you can use the ballhead to fit to a full height tripod if you need one in the future.

I have just purchased a manfrotto monopod and that came with a 234 head would that fit do you recon, have you tried this tripod i see it has no brace?

try the gollirapod as suggested would fit bill and fits into luggage very easily.

or buy one over there and throw it away when done as it wont get used again over here will it?

You don't say what lens combination though.

I have a manfrotto 785b, retails about £45. Less than 45cm long when folded and can support my 50D and 24-105 lens - just - when fully extended, but is much better when used shortened, i.e. sitting height. The head on top is fixed and can just support about 1.5kg easily but no more. Spec says 1kg.

Small and light (less than 1kg) so it's my choice when walking etc - but that may change as I've just bought a redsnapper carbon.:D

I've got no experience with this one, but reading the Amazon reviews, it looks like it might fit the bill :).

Link ...

Costs under 25 quid (by 1p :D), delivered free to your door in 24 hours and packs down to only 14"!

Quite fancy one myself, now :D.

How about a Gorillapod? Very small, incredibly versatile. You should be able to find something to cling it to when taking your shots

[Edit] Apologies - just seen this has been mentioned before. In which case add this as a vote for the gorillapod.

thel sony one looks on and it has a brace has anyone experience of the Giottos 1060

To be honest I don't know if Manfrotto heads fit Giottos legs - it's possible that the fixings are universal. I own the Giottos 1060 and use it more than the full size one. Its legs spread as wide as you want to create stability if that's a concern. It was for me.

I have a cobra one £9 posted, 18" long when shut, 50"extended, 1lb 12oz in weight, good condition one small dent on leg. Ric.

is there anything to stop it doing the splits

The 234 is the tilt head isn't it? So that really wouldn't be much use on a tripod as you would have to rotate the whole tripod to line up a shot.

I don't see why Manfrotto heads shouldn't fit Giotto tripods, but I don't think the head you have will be much help.

have a look here £10.00 from amazon , they also sell them in ASDA.

Sorry - but that's virtually identical to the cheapo i bought from Argos which collapsed upon me and nearly destroyed my 400 quid lens. These things ARE NOT WORTH THE MONEY!! Seriously...

.

Hama - First tripod i bought years ago still use it for night fishing where i can leave it outside the bivyvy -cause if it gets nicked i dont care never any problems . yet my red snapper has fallen over with the D300 and wrecked a sigma 105mm macro...............but that was probably user error, and now i have a carbon manfrotto and that appears less stable than the redsnapper without hanging a bag onto it.

Just checked i've got the star 42 version

Try pulling the camera rearwards - against the securing stop - and see if it will come off. Mine does. Which makes it a bit dangerous if you ever pick up the tripod to carry the whole lot like I sometimes do. Other than that, and it being a bit wobbly at full height, it's ok as a better-than-nothing travel tripod.

Another vote for the Gorillapod.

I use the Zoom SLR version for hillwalks to reduce the weight.
Here's a shot I took showing it supporting a 1D MKII plus a 100-400 lens.
Not that I need that combo on a hill walk. :D

Yup - going to retract my suggestion now. Trying to shoot bluebells in dusk last night, so long exposures and I didn't get one sharp image:bang: looks like the head kept moving. Good job my new tripod comes monday

I've got a 785B too, very compact and light, I take it when I'm walking about London, just hooks onto my Lowepro slingshot 100.

It's not very sturdy at full extension, so I usually use it shortened, does the job with my 30D + Sigma 10-20.
