Following on from my ebay thread I am now confused by paypal. I registered with them and put in my bank debit card details. Having won the ebay auction I now have to pay. Went on to the ebay site and followed through my account links to the oustanding bid. Clicked on the paypal button which after putting in paypal password etc ended up at a payment page with the correct amount but when I clicked on pay it asked me for credit card details :bang:

I found the paypal site completely useless at explaining how the system actually works, it was just page after page telling me how wonderfull it is. Why when they said I could use my debit card and let me register with that do they now insist on my credit card to make a payment?

Also I have seen a small program I want listed on a Russian site. The cost is in dollars, $6.99. I am a bit cautious about ordering from a russian site tbh. I have seen it mentioned on several forums as being ok and it has been around for a while. The risk of not getting the program or it being wrong is minor as I would only lose $6.99 but what worries me is whether they could take more money from my account. I know paypal claims to be secure so am I worrying over nothing? Also how does paypal handle paying in a different currency? Will I be stung for fees and such?

many thanks,

i believe the paypal site will ask for your credit or debit card details every time you buy something. cause after transaction is complete your details [card number] is deleted and that makes it more secure.

i think this is how it works

as for buying something from russia i have no idea wot to advise

but hope the above helps

Often things like that say Credit Card when they really mean credit or debit card. Just my 2 bananas

You have to verify your bank account and also verify your address you don't knead to put you credit card on if you don't wont to i prefer you-sing credit card , if you sell things you have to have bank details registered to be paid

Login in, goto profile.
Under "financial info" goto "credit cards" add debit/credit card and "make primary" if not done so already. Details are stored but only show last 4 no's and expiry date.
BTW what's the prog your after?

Im sure when you register with PayPal, you have to register your bank.
This is how its done.
They take a small payment from your bank (around a 70 pence to a pound) and they ask you to tell them how much has been taken out, this is becuase your the only one who would know that! You then type the amount in to verify the account, and the amount in paid back in full immediatly.

Hope that makes sense..

Thanks for the help. I added my credit card and it worked. However, I may remove it as if anyone gets into my account they could order automatically. I assume the debit card details I had to put in when registering were just to id me.

Did you try paying with your debit card?

To quote PayPal's description of a credit card: "Debit cards (also called cheque cards or bank cards) are accepted if they have a Visa or MasterCard logo". This includes Switch and Maestro cards.

Foreign currency payments are made at the current exchange rate at the time of the transaction, there are no fees charged.

Michael.
