URGENT Kindle Users

I'v not had anything from Amazon either on the Kindle or by email, still seems to work fine.

Iirc the device is unable to connect to Amazon (ie you can't buy books, download books you already own, etc) until you update it via USB.

Mines running fine (Kindle Keyboard 3rd Generation).
Wi-Fi working a-ok :-)

If everything's working fine you may already have the update. I just checked mine as this was news to me. 4th gen, bought no idea how long ago, only every connected to wifi when I buy a book, and it has the right software version. Go to settings and the version is at the bottom of the page, then check it against the Amazon help page for whichever device you have.

If you miss the download deadline, you can do it manually.

Yeah this is all a bit insidious from Amazon....

A while ago they sneaked in a feature meaning they could delete anything they wanted from your Kindle. In theory this is part of a "clampdown" on piracy but whatever the reasons, it allows them to do pretty much anything they want with the content on your device regardless of where you sourced it. Some people objected so they refused to install any s/w upgrades - after all the old s/w worked fine so why bother if it gives Amazon the power to do even more of what they want?

Now if you don't upgrade you won't be able to legally buy books from them.

It won't really affect anybody - if you haven't bothered changing any settings then you almost certainly already have the latest s/w (including Amazon's god mode). If you objected to it at the time, well, you probably use Callibre.
