I have just lost a dear friend of some 70 years, we were aged 4 when we first met and have remained close buddies ever since. Unfortunately he passed away last Saturday after a relatively short illness and the medics still don't know what was wrong with him. They are doing a PM today to try to get to the bottom of it.

I am looking for a little help from fellow forum members if possible please. I have found an old picture of me and my friend when we were teenagers but there is a large crease/scratch across the picture. I wonder if anyone could spare a few minutes to try to eliminate the mark for me. I will happily send a Paypal payment to anyone who can help. Many thanks.

I hope that this post will show OK.

I'll be the back-up plan!

Thank you so much to those who have responded, I really am most grateful.

How best can I get a higher resolution image to you. When I put it in the scanner I get options to scan as tif files. pdf but can't see a jpeg which is normally what I see on piccy's. I have a photobucket link that I could use but the resolution still has to be right doesn't it. Thanks again.

My very amateur efforts, work in progress to remove more of the blemishes.

if you want to scan it as a tiff that would be good, and then put it onto drop box that will give you a link that we can download it from as it is I've done a quick edit

50-60 years from now what are we going to do? We hardly print any snaps, they all end up on Facebook or similar.
Sorry to hear of the loss of your good friend. You're so lucky to have this pic Geoff, I hope we can also dig out old photos like this in time to come, but I doubt it.

Blimey! That's amazing. Thank you. I will scan it as a tiff then.

I have scanned it as a tiff at 1200, but it is not appearing in the place where I saved it and so I can't upload it to here now. Any tips please. Sorry to be a pain.

Assuming your on windows check the scanned documents folder

When I scanned it I saved it to the same file that all of the previous ones were saved to but when I go into that file I am not given an option to open a tiff file. I have looked into 'my scans' and it's not there either!

Edit.....when I go into the file, it is there as a tiff file but when I try to upload it to here, it doesn't show

You'll need to store/host it somewhere so we can download it, if its under 20mb I think you can attach it to an email if it is I'll PM you my email address  how large is the file?

Under properties it says that it is 12.3mb I did go into Photobucket but when I went to the file it wasn't there going that route either. is it too big? The actual photo is only 2.5" wide by 3.5" high

upload it to this site

http://www.speedyshare.com/

and get the share link, (just the download link is fine), and post that link here..... doubt photobucket will like a 12 meg tiff file :)

Anyone working on the file, share it as full res jpeg, either hosted on flickr or via speedyshare if you have no other method.

Thank you so much to all who offered or gave me the help that I needed. I wanted to prepare something to attach to the floral tribute. Hopefully it will show here now.

Thanks again everyone.

A fine tribute and happy to have been able to help...

Sad news. The tribute looks great.

On a side note could Mathew tell us learners how he repaired the photo :-) Please___Gaz

Yeah, well to a point I can, it's actually not a particularly complex process, I do pretty much all my editing in CS6 however this could be done on pretty much any software with the ability to clone..

Quite a lot of the minor areas I was able to trust "content aware" to fix, the more complex areas required use of clone stamp where you simply have to clone in new content (pixels) from surrounding areas, in certain bits namely the hands I've pretty much reconstructed them with what was left there cloning in new bits of hand from the existing hand, it's not really hard it's just time consuming to get it exactly now you want..

I also then has to try and balance the exposure a little as from the scanning process the photo area below the crease was just a little lighter which made the repair look a little obvious, but this was done with just a black paint brush set to 5% opacity and with a very soft edge to it to effetely feather darkness around the crease to just hide the repair a little

I'll add I'm sure those with more experience would do it very differently but I do what gets the results for me

I'm just pleased to have been able to offer some small help

Great explanation Mathew. Mnay thanks for that. I would have tried that method to if I was to have had a go but most probably with less success__Gaz

Once again, many thanks to all who became involved and for the nice comments. Just one question, how did you suss out who is Gary and who is Geoff as the names are a different way round in each photo. lol
