Urgent help please. CS4 extended

Please help. For some strange reason, when I open an image in cs4, the image opens but I can't work on it because all I get is the hand icon. I've tried selecting various brushes, clone stamp etc, but I can't get them.

I've shut it down and re-opened a number of times, can anyone tell me what to do?

Does it have more than one layer? what happens if you try a different picture?
 
I've had this in Elements and a reboot was needed to sort it. I've no idea what caused it or if there's a better solution.

Thanks ever so much for the replies.

I shut it down again then re-started and everything is back to normal.

p.s. It was happening on all images, some with just one layer, some with more.

Glad you've got it back!

Tapping the space bar usually clears it, otherwise try:

Edit>Preferences>General>Reset all warning dialogues

...if it happens again.
