Right so I've been asked by a mate to do some shots of his fighters training!
Some posed stuff and some action shots of them sparring!
I would imagine that the light in the gym will be pretty poor!
I have 1 speedlight and a set of wireless triggers so OCF is an option but not something I'm particularly familiar with!
I was thinking of shooting with my 17-50 f2.8,I also have a 35mm f1.8 and a 50mm f1.8.
So I'm thinking high ISO or flash on camera would be my safest bets!
So my questions are:-
What option would people choose(Available lighting,on camera flash or OCF)!
What sort of shutter speeds will i need to freeze people fighting!
Do I up the iso a bit if using the flash on camera?
What settings would people recommend!

Sorry for all the waffle, just after some ideas rather than having to learn very quickly on the job!
Just want to add I'm not getting paid for this,it's just a favour for a mate!
If any of the pics turn out any good some may be printed and put up in the gym!
There's no pressure to get it right first time,I can go back to the gym when ever i want, but preferably i would like to get at least some useable stuff first time!
Just want to do the best i can!
Thanks Simon!

this really is an impossible question to ask as there are too many variables. but some pointers

if you're struggling with exposure too dark with action shots, up the ISO
use what ever natural light you can.
get there early and take some shots to get the camera setup.
flash on or off will really depend on the effect you're after, either way you'll probably want to diffuse it or bounce it.
the 17-50 will give you more versatility without interrupting the training.

good luck

I was, thinking 17-50 and start with available light!
I have a shoot through umbrella and a light stand which may be OK for the posed stuff, but the action in the ring will have to be available i would imagine!
Don't think they will want flash going off whilst fighting!

I would think the light in the gym would be quite good. One thing my 7000 isnt great at is auto selecting the correct white balance under flourescent lights. You may have to select manually. I would ramp up the iso in shutter priority and keep the shutter speed up.

Thanks Chris,I will probably shoot in Raw so i can address any white balance issues in pp.

Does anyone know what sort of shutter speed would be required to freeze the action?

probably start at 1/1000 and see if yo can get enough light in, dont forget up the iso to help.

When posing, as well as your typical portrait lighting try direct flash without defusing it. You can even down light them with a homemade snoot (don't forget to eat the pringles first!;)). This will create strong shadows and a more masculine image. You are not necessary trying to create flattering images.

Thanks!
You would do well to flatter any of these guys!
I was actually thinking of some UWA shots to really distort perspective!
Thinking gloves in front of face!

Well the light was worse than i thought!:bang:

iso6400 @ f2.8 and still only got 1/500 shutter speed and that was in the ring which was the best lit part of the gym!

This is 1 I grabbed!
