I have been offered a Courtenay 1000S Sola flash together with a Courtenay Photographic Lighting 32" umbrella and stand for £60.

The person who owns it has said I need to collect it tonight if I would like it.

I'm very much an amateur photographer, but like the idea of experimenting with some studio lighting. I currently own a Nikon D40 (plan to upgrade this year!) and was wondering if the above lights would be any use to me?

I understand they are quite old, but good quality equipment (and in good condition). Will it be compatible with my camera? What else would I need to make use of it (remotes etc)? Is £60 a fair price?

Many thanks to anyone with any advice!

You may not be able to get it repaired if necessary, you won't be able to get any modifiers to fit it, the light is a strange shade of blue, it has very little power adjustment and you must fire it via a radio trigger - don't plug it directly into your camera unless you like fried cameras - but for the price it's probably worth considering.

Thank you for your reply Garry. There are quite a few negatives that you mention there! How much would I be looking at for a remote trigger?

I must admit you have put me off somewhat. Maybe I am better waiting and purchasing more up to date equipment...

Im not a pro at lightimg equipment - far from it, but i had a quick look and i wouldnt recommend it really. Its a good price yes, but you wont be happy with the equipment really and a radio trigger will also put you back a bit too. Soo i would wait till you get a little more into your photography, upgrade your camera and then consider some newer kit.

Best of luck
Bart

You can get radio triggers very cheaply via fleabay, this one seems to be the cheapest at the moment, but I doubt whether it will see you into your old age...

Courtenay were a decent make in their day, they were very low-stressed and so tend to last a long time, but they aren't really up to current standards

Well if anyone else lives around the Surrey area and is interested in the equipment, let me know and I'll pass the details on.

It is a genuine sale. The lady's husband was a photographer but he has sadly passed on.
