Hi Guys.
I have a Canon 60 D with kit lens.

I would like to get another lens that would be good for shooting urban photos like streets, people walking about, people sitting in cafes, buildings, anything urban really.
I've tried my lens at 50mm and it seems too long so a nifty-fifty might not be the choice.
I am looking at either a 20mm prime or 30mm prime or a 10-20mm wide angle.
Is there anything else that might be alright.
I like the 10-20mm as its good for landscape shots as well, but I will consider my options.
Plus do prime lenes have a wider angle than kit lenses..

Cheers.

Hi Gerrard!

I'm shooting Nikon so I'm not familiar with Canon lenses... but if I have to guess a 28mm prime would be very good for the type of work you want to accomplish. On a crop sensor 28mm translates to a real NORMAL lens and I enjoy very much to use an old MF Nikkor 28/2 AI-S as a single lens solution on my D7000 when going on streets.

Paul.. Sigma 30mm f/1.4, can't recommend it highly enough for that type of thing.. very much a see-it, shoot-it lens with an APS-C sensor body.

I have the 10-22 and its a lovely lens, but very very wide with a fair amount of distortion and vignetting when its wide open.

You could think about doubling up - with a prime along the lines you suggest and then a general purpose walk around zoom lens, which will give you more opportunity to zoom in on detail such as interaction of people.

Depending on you budget I would recommend you look at the 18 - 135, or 17-85 or if you have the money, the 15-85 canon lens. I had the 18 - 135 as one of my first lens and I have fond memories of it!

I think it would be a good lens, plus for me its nice to see what other people think.
Cheers.

Alastair. Do these prime lenes offer a more wide angle than my normal kit lens.

Your kit lens probably starts at 17 or 18mm so no they are not wider. Canon 10-22 is your best bet if you want to wider... Personal opinion of course.

No, but the 10-20 would. This is also a nice focal length but I find it a bit distant for street scenes, it's too wide for me.

I know urban is the road I want to be heading down (black and white especially) so the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is what I need I think.
I will sort it out when we visit the UK in a couple of weeks time.
PS.. Perhaps a 10-20 next time..

I use a sigma 10-20mm 90% of the time, anytime that's off my camera I stick a 35mm 1.8 on there and it suits me down to the ground- Have a look at lots of examples and see what kind suits the stuff you want to shoot!

This is only what I have read.. but the Sigma's have had a few problems with calibration with a Canon.
Has anyone used the Canon 20mm EF f2.8 USM or the Canon 28mm F1.8 USM.
