Stumbled across an interesting site.

If you don't know what Urban Exploring is, it seems to be a hobby for people who go out day or night and explore abandoned buildings and take photographs.

Im not sure whether some of this is classed as trespassing, but just had a look at the site and some fabulous photos from some of them.

Just seen a thread on the now derelict Odeon Cinema in Wakefield, with guys on the roof at night with their cameras and tripods. Not sure I'd go that far to get a great shot mind lol

oh the link would be handy
http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=26523

Thats the wakefield cinema, but some much better pics in other threads

Interesting find !

Really quite like the fire hydrant shot, however i think the shot titled Mr Silverstealth looks somewhat dodgy to me lol

I love that forum, was a member when it first started, but I think there was a 'nuke' along the way and I re-registered not so long ago.

Fantastic stuff that these people see. I'd love to do it myself, just think of myself as a bit to fat and .......(whats the opposite of nimble?)...lol to do it.
Plus I dont know anyone in my local area who's willing to let me tag along (although there are a couple on 28dayslater that meet up with members near me).

I'd love to go along.

I just need a decent camera, a bit more confidence, a head for hights (as some go scaling all sorts) and a damn fine excuse to the Old Bill when I get collared lol.

In all serious though, what an exciting way to get wicked shots.

It's most definately tresspassing and depending how you get in it could even be an offence (criminal damage, breaking and entering etc). However, if you read the site they cover about how to deal with security and the police if you are found out - simply leave when requested.

There are risks:
To health from unstable buildings or from discarded drug related things
You may be arrested on suspicion of criminal damage / breaking and entering even if you haven't done anything wrong.

Personally I'd love to do it but my job requires me to have Government Security Clearance and I have to declare everything including arrests / cautions etc as part of that process. Even though I'm sure it won't matter (as long as I declare the truth) I'd rather not take that risk with my livelyhood

OOh! thanks for the reminder ... havent been on that forum for the longest time.

I think it's Hopkin Green Frog who used to go Urban Exploring, and Adam (FB) had a chance encounter while doing it see here
His piccies arent in the thread any more unfortunately but its still worth a read.

Ive been registered on there for over a year now, although there are some great pics up there, i found most people on there to be very unhelpful, it seems to be a very cliquey site, havent been on there since finding this site!

Exactly my view too, it's a shame as it's actually a really interesting site. I also got the impression that some of them took it all a bit too serious.

Links working again.

For some reason I find this really interesting. Not just for the photo opportunities, but to explore a little piece of history. Its a real shame to see say 1930s cinemas or swimming pools fall into such disrepair and closed down. Instead replaced by square, dull factory like blocks that we call pools, cinemas, community centres today.

I know im on a photograpy site, but id be collecting scraps of materials, fabrics, posters to make collages, as well as taking photographs.

Maybe its late and im tired but i see some sort of romanticism in it. To be stood in a little piece of history, thinking of its former glory days. I imagine Id feel rather sad.

I used to be on there all the time, reading rather than posting most of the time. Some of them do do some cool stuff, but as mentioned above, it's one of the most cliquey over-moderated sites on the 'net. Dare to question one of the gang and you're out and the threads locked in minutes.

Oh well, keeps them happy I suppose..

Having done the smallest amount of amateur urbexing, I can confirm it's great fun, and I'd love to do more :)

I do a lot, some of which I post. A lot I don't due to locations, access etc, and in certain cases I know exactly what I am letting myself into. There are plenty of fools that would try the same, with no experiance.

A few of my mates like the high stuff. Not for me any more, don't know why !! Even when I was in my early twenties I would climb on anything. But not now. Wish I could, I have turned down some amazing opportunities!!

no excuse Marcel i'm fat git and go on odd Urban adventure. I'm glad i live in Scotland no tresspass law up here lol

I totally agree. There are some buildings like those in Glasgow that must be full of time capsules. There is something about exploring old buildings, factories... things like that.

The empty asylums are the eeriest of them all ,i also find them very sad .There's one being converted into flats it was called Craig Dunain near Inverness .I remember visiting my uncle there when i was in my early teens ,so when i came on the 28 days site it came as a bit of a surprise that people actually sneak into these premises to take photos.

I remember as a kid of 9 or 10, taking a bus ride into town with my sister to catch the Saturday morning matinee at this cinema.
That was 20 odd years ago, it was all Herbie films, and Jodie Foster at 10 years old crap.....Pearl & Dean....dada dada dada da daa da da da.
wth happened to smax crisps..I dunno:'(

It sounds strange but , my dream has always been to photograph an abandoned asylum/hospital or atleast urban explore one

One day *sob*

Im trying to not make this an advert but I own broken-britain.com

It is also an Urbex forum but we specialize on mainly kent sites and are in the process of turning all of the explores into individual website pages for information purposes...

I do agree though.. they have great pictures on 28DL

I think www.contaminationzone.com has got to be one of the best for good pictures.

I remember his stuff........it was good.

I've been looking at some of the sites mentioned and it seems to me its not just taking the shot; it's how its processed that adds to the feel of sadness and decay. Contamination zone looks pretty amazing!

i am hoping to go to some tunnels near me soon

I grew up in wakey and went to this cinema a lot in my childhood, such a shame to see it in this state. have taken a few run down shots of the outside, i'll have to take my wellies next time i go and force the doors. hopefully some cash laden fool will buy it and turn it into some 'luxury flats' ho hum
