thanks in advance
Bill

I've had a try at upsizing it for you. Pretty impossible to get anything decent from such a small file.

Looks like when I uploaded the file the gremlins have resized it again. Oh well i did try.

yes thanks i managed to upsize it to a3 and from about 5-6 feet it looks ok but any closer and its very blocky, thanks again

No. You need a bigger file to start with. Back to what the camera produced rather than a web-grab.

Looks like an old b&w image do you have the original print you can scan again to start with a higher res starter image?

Edit ~ may be an old image but perhaps the copyright owner could arrange a print or by arrangement a suitable sized file to print from ;). Sorry if I am wrong and it is your image to start with.......it is your image, isn't ???

Good :) but you were asking on what is afteral a photography forum and matters of copyright and permission to use or even post an image that is not yours are important questions hereabouts ;)

Though it is extremely unlikely that the copyright belongs to the forum in which case it would be impossible for them to give that permission. If the person who owns the copyright has put it on there that would be a different matter. I suspect that most people who post old images like this are either reposting pictures found on the internet or scans of old photographs/postcards they have bought. This does not mean that they own the copyright. I'm not trying to suggest there is anything wrong, only that it is a very grey area.

Without absolute qualification as to whether you have the copyright holders permission Brian makes a very valid point. Yes as an old image and your personal use you are unlikely to actually get into any trouble but any such abuse of copyright is not just about the law but arguably a morals question.........but there are many such discussions about this across photography fora.

i asked a simple question. if people do not know the answer thats fine. if i breach copyright in some way thats my problem. i go onto so many forums where people busy them selves with various things except answering the question. i wish they wouldnt do that.

What you wish for and what you get are very often two different things. And as this is a photography forum it shouldn't be too surprising that copyright and some peoples disregard for it is a matter that most people here have an interest in.

Hi Bill

Nobody is involving themselves in your business and as you say any decisions you make are yours but this is a public forum where in regard to your question/request for help the question indeed on the face of it is simple but by asking about modifications of an image to which there are copyright implications feedback on that aspect is relevant because of the public nature of this forum.....if only to inform others asking a similar question.

The only analogy that comes to mind if for example you post on a performance car forum asking to increase the engine power by reprogramming the ECU and someone says "do make sure to tell your insurers because if you don't you could void your insurance". Would you tell that person they are busying themselves in not answering the question......or thank them for the heads up?

In this example the requester may as you say simply thanks for the answer of how to make the mods but it is my choice whether I ignore telling the insurer.....of course the potential consequences of so doing in this case has massive damaging potential compared to copyright matters but the principal is the same.

It is up to you what you do but not all simple questions have simple answers ;)
