Yes
Hi All

I'm after a bit of advice / reassurance

I've recently been building up my portfolio, mostly fashion shoots (see some previous posts)

Work has really been picking up, mainly from recomendations.

Last night I got another inquiry about a Fashion shoot on a TFCD basis, no problem for me as I'm developing my portfolio, So I said yes, send me some sample images and I'll consider it. Images duely sent and agreed, we started trying to arrange a time and date via email.

BUT what happened next is whats got to me.

after we agreed a suitable date, I asked if she wanted to come to my studio or do a locaton shoot.

Her response came as this

"Hmmm well I can't drive, so you could come here and do a shoot, but as my flats not up to much, why don't you do an adult shoot, my rates are £45 ph"

now I've naturally declied this, as I don't want to risk damaging my other business and I'm not comfortable with this type of work (each to there own)

But what got me was the brazen sudden change of tune. I suspect this was the plan from the start. I actually had to wake the wife and talk to her as was quite upset.

The odd thing is I thought it was meant to be pushy togs, and not pushy models.

I always pride myself on my manners and taking care of the models when i shoot (i've had very good feedback)

Can anyone tell me if this has happened to them? am I being paranoid or just over sensitive?

Many thanks for your responses

Neil

wait so instead of TFCD she wants you to pay for the shoot? i think thats disgusting, believe me thats not paranoia i would be upset the same, thinking you can get a good shoot and they pull a reply from there backsides like that.

just tell her to take a bus as your not going to pay her to take images for her gain aswell.

I don't really follow her logic! She can't drive, her flat isn't very nice, so she wants to take her clothes off and charge you £45 per hour?! Not really going to make the flat any nicer surely?!

From reading posts on here, I think it's not uncommon for models to flake/change their tune mid-negotiation. If you're going to be getting into it seriously, I think you're just going to have to accept the fact that not everyone is going to be as honest and forthcoming as you are!

Reply very nicely saying something like "Thanks for the offer, I am currently unable to offer any payment other than images on a CD. If this is not sufficent then good luck in the future" etc etc.

Some models will be good, some won't be, it's just life. Consider is a lesson learned, don't let it knock your confidence, and find another model!

Chris

Sounds like a con artist to me,i know what i would tell her.:nono:

thing is I DON'T want an adult shoot, and the images she sent were quite clearly FASHION style.

I personally think it was touting for business, sub versivley.

Sounds very fishy to me. Bear in mind that a woman like this may very well have large muscular boyfriends in tow, and when you get there her price will have gone up a lot. Steer clear. I'm sure your portfolio will develop nicely without her!
Good Luck.

Surely you mean "mildly angry" not "upset"?

Just forget about her and move on to another model.

I'd give that one a wide body swerve, Neil.
Anyone who who would spring that on you will have other surprises.

You may even get set up for a mugging.

It happens. Just tell her you don't do that kind of shoot and move on. Of course she had an ulterior motive but people sometimes do. If you are going to be doing this kind of photography you will encounter people like this on both sides of the lens.

You can't let this kind of thing upset you or you are going to be upset rather a lot I'm afraid. Yes it's not nice but you don't have to go along with it so just tell her politely that you don't and move on.

Did this enquiry come direct or via a site like Purestorm?

If it come via a site, a nice email detailing what happened to the admins could be usefull. It could stop some one else being stung!!

I'll go check it out for you.... am single now... hahahahaha........

Kidding. Don't go near it.
She probably has a caravan in the colour of Perrywinkle Blue

I cant understand why you're upset? Annoyed, yes.

Dont stress about it, its nothing :)

One of my mates has a friend down in Newcastle. He had a similar thing happen. He now shoots her once a month in her bedroom, whilst the husband watches telly downstairs. He says there are often photographers coming and going, she is earning a mint :)

Gary.

had to remind myself that this is a photography forum !!! lol :)

to the OP, dont get upset, polite email reply, then move on.

i had something similar when i told her i wouldnt charge her for my services as a photographer.
she said she wanted paid work i declined as well.

yeah MM actually, i was considering mentioning it to the admins, but i suspect she's done nothing wrong

the upset came from the thought that this happens.

I'm normally a very clued up person and I can normally spot a scam a mile away. my concern is now what some of you mentioned, going to location shoots and leaving without my gear!

The other portion of the upset came from the thought that this is what has to be done to make money, as either a photographer or Model.

I want to do high end fashion, i know it's hard work and really difficult to get into.

I guess i just questioned my own sensibillities

I find your reaction rather bizare tbh. You were "quiet upset"? You woke the wife up to discuss it?

How very strange........

Also you asked her if she wanted to come to your place or do a location shoot. So you offered a choice. Perhaps her place was the "location shoot"".

But generally, god knows why you are crying about a single potential shoot that has gone tits up. Big deal. Move on.

The more I think about it. The more it seems less of a scam. She's offered you the chance to shoot her in the nude for a fee. But teh original deal of fashion shots still stand for free? I don't think she's on the game, just expanding ;)
I see no reason for you to be upset or report her.
I think you might be a little paranoid over it?

Fairly good definition of a prostitute I'd say. :)

So, by your definition, all strippers are prostitutes? (Yes, I did take note of the smiley face)

Apart from that, I agree with the other posters above. You offered her a TFCD deal and she's now wanting cash to show a bit more than you're hoping to see in a shabby flat, possibly with a welcoming comittee. Avoid! Report her to the site (if she goit your details from an agency type one) and/or post warnings about her if it's a forum type recommendation.

Don't let it upset you, just write it off to experience and move on with a small lesson learned.

Good point Nod...
There could be lots of Pikeys waiting to get there hands on you camera gear.

At the end of this thread I will count how many times I've changed my opinion ;)

I've sussed it!!!!

It's not a model... you will be greeted by this...

Nope! I charge to keep my kit ON (and most people would be more than happy to cough up rather than risk a glimpse of me in the all-together).

cheers for the comments guys, I can see both sides of the fence, and I appriciate your responses.

I guess It's just I never looked for and asked for any type of work from this genre.

My misus says I'm over sensitive about these things, and just notch this up to a learning curve.

oh well I guess your gonna have this type of thing happen.

onwards and sideways

I would have been suprised and showed my wife for a good laugh at the cheek.. But I doubt very much it would have upset me.. But we are all different and thats what makes the world go round:)

Its sad how an innocent request for a fashion model had now been turned into some lurid stakeout with heavies waiting to take your gear. But no worse than the muppet who met some guys in a car park to buy a bmw x5 for cash and got knifed to death for his troubles.

Keep your eyes open and if something smells remotely like a scam, then it probably is.

Its easy to check the credentials of models (with references that can be traced to established togs) and its better to give a wide berth to any danger if in doubt.

You haven't been robbed, you haven't been threatened, you still have your gear, and your a couple of emails down...

In reality, you've not lost anything (except some sleep)

Look forward and use this to spur you on.

good luck :)

your absolutely right, i suspect it was just a very keen model who most likely was trying to earn a living, and it's me who didn't like it.

Your right, i'll learn and move on

Yeah, I can guarantee that the photographers who goes to her house to take the photographs are doing it for the wrong reasons too. Remember folks, if you are a talented photographer, people pay YOU to take their photographs, not the other way round.

Of course, he admitted as much too...

Each to their own I guess, not my cuppa...

Is he sure the other guys are photographers and not punters?

Nope I have an agreement that I will provide 15 High quality retouched images ona CD, usually takes me about 5 days to do them.

I do this as a hobby for now, but i'd love to go permenant

Thats a lot of images and a lot of time to spend as a hobby. When I first started portfolio photography I had in my head that I would do 10 as TFCD, then start charging, which is exactly what I did.

Though you may like to go permanent, you will struggle to ever make a living from just portfolio photography, unless you are reknowned the world over. It's one thing getting models to book you for TFCD purposes - getting them to pay you is a different kettle of fish altogether.

Cheers

Wow - that's a nice attitude you've got there

i didn't mean it to come across like that :(

after being the subject of a vicious knife crime myself, it can be a bad world sometimes and not worth taking risks.

It won't spoil your life to be careful, but might if you dont. thats all.
