UPS and import duty

We import stuff using them all the time. They will always get you. They add their own charge on as well which is on a rolling scale, the last one was £18 if I remember.

I've often wondered how some of the sellers on Ebay get away with avoiding the import duties (especially VAT), surely when so many items come in to the UK from the same address overseas & then (in some cases) to the same address in the UK for distribution that customs & excise would have cottoned on by now??

Some of them have thousands & thousands of feedback, it makes you wonder how they get away with it........

so it is door step collection and not a bill?
better get to the cash machine before tomorrow.

Our local UPS driver tends to sneak up and stick a card through the door which he has strangely already written when there is duty due so I have to do a ten mile round trip and collect the parcel

I had a lens from the states a few months ago, UPS delivered and there was no import duty. I guess i was lucky, sometimes they do slip through the net.

Lucky chap  Most of our stuff comes from pro jewellery manufacturing suppliers in the states and they love to put the value on (sometimes rounding it up which costs us even more!!)

I know im going have to pay up because it says it on their tracking info.
Could do with knowing what im going to have to pay

How much is the item..... You can work it out but add £18 for their charge (it might not be that much but that is how much our last one was - might be on their web site)

From my experience they don't even release the package from the depot until the import duty has been paid over the phone - it is possible the drivers have the means to take payment.

In which case in the absence of a phone number a pre written card would be the easiest way of letting you know. I've had one card and on another where a phone number was available they called me.

Looks like i have another few day to get the cash as for some reason only known to UPS they have shipped my camera from East midlands airport to frankfurt. As if its not bad enough with the militant sods at royal mail walking out!

My wife bought an 89-ish quid worth of goods from US, UPS charged 40+ quids... what to do?
No more next time for UPS.

I have 3k worth (value to me, not cost of item) of goods now stuck in the royal mail system. not a happy bunny.

I do hope it's insured for the full value. If they start to use temporary staff to sort the expected backlog then you can expect items to start going missing :(
Despite what the bosses are saying they simply haven't had time to vet all of the 30,000 extra staff they intend to draft in.

No, I don't work for RM but I do know their systems and procedures :)

I have purchased quite a few lens from the US, and never had to pay any duty (UPS or any other carrier. Perhaps I've just been fortunate.

Nigel.

UPS always wants a cheque on the doorstep, FEDEX, dhl etc all invoice you after

Why are you worrying about the Royal mail, if the carrier is UPS.

And UPS often wont accept cash because they don't want drivers carrying it around. A small amount, if you have the exact change, is normally accepted though.
