I have been a member here for more years than I care mention, yet still, I can't recall what the maximum allowable image size is that can be inserted into a thread.
I have probably asked this question before but couldn't find it.

IIRC
Max 1200px longest edge & 500kb file size

Not quite @Box Brownie , longest side 1024px (although you may occasionally have been able to bust that rule!). 500kb is correct

Not really, if you check the data on attachments, many are only a couple of 100 kb

Absolutely, off site hosting costs us nothing, attachments all add up to server usage
Its worth mentioning for those that don't know, the 1024px rule still applies though.

If you drag and drop the image is it auto resized?

I've just tried it uploaded at 1.5 Mb & 3000px on the longest side, it's now 1024 on the longest side and 240 kb so she short answer is yes.
