Can anyone help not sure if I doing something wrong but quite a few of my photos are saying too large for the server to upload.
 
I'm having this problem also.. I'm following the resizing guidlines to the point of reducing the image size to less than the prescribed 1024 x 685 and still receiving the image too large message

Agreed.

I reduce copies for Talk Photography to 1024 maximum, as advised, then use OS-X Preview's export function to set the file size to 500KB or less. Both maxima must be observed, in order not to be blocked.
 
As above, the rules are 1024px on the longest side and max file size of 500kb, if you want to load the photo onto the site. That's why many host them on Flickr etc and use BBCode links to provide access to the full resolution images.
 
I have been resizing but missing the max 500kb part of the resizing so thank you for that
