Hi folks , i hope this is ok to post here.

I have been thinking about upgrading my camera as i am rocking a Canon 350d :) i would really love to stick with canon but im not sure what model to get , i shoot alot of portraits and being a beginner i cant really afford a super expensive one lol

Could anyone recommend a good Canon camera that i dont have to sell my soul to buy?

What about your 350d is it that you feel is holding you back, or what do you want to improve?

What lenses do you have?

5D + 85 mm f/1.8 ought to work nicely for portraiture..

i just feel that my 350d is a good Beginner camera and i think im moving up in the world lol the 350d will always be my little back up camera :)

What lenses have you got?

i have a 18-55mm kit lens , Canon EF 50mm f/1.8II and a 90-300mm (but im in the process of looking for a new lens as well as a new camera body)

The 18-55mm is EF-S so won't fit on a full frame body and is not the most stellar lens. The nifty 50 on the other hand, will fit and is considered to be a sharp lens and a bit of a bargain. I don't know the 90-300mm lens.

yeah the nifty 50 is on the list of lenses for when i get a new camera body :) i have a few other lenses in mind but i dont have an insane amount to spend on a camera body and lens :(

Are you after full frame or crop? Really depends on budget though

I went from a 350 to a 50. May be a few years old but excellent camera. Should be able to pick one up pretty cheap.
As for a lens, sigma 18-125 is an excellent value all round lens.

This hasn't been answered yet. But it's the most important question of all.

i havent got a budget as of yet (will do at the end of next month) but i cant see it being more than 500 :( (well until i save abit more)

To be honest i dont feel my 350d is holding me back i just think it is time that i upgrade to a different camera body as i have had this one for a few years now. I have always been comfortable using it and absolutely love it ... but ... like most photographers a new camera body is definitely something that is wanted

Sorry it took me a while to reply

Get a real camera go for the 1D MK III I have seen them on eBay from £300-600 average a serious amount of camera smack in your budget range, you'll have to sell the ef-s lens though if you don't keep the 350d. Or buy my 1D MKII and have some £`so over for lenses, (I have the MKIV now). Enter the Pro arena it's another world holding one of these ;)

OK. What you're saying is that a new camera will not make any difference to your photography. Think about that for a bit. Is that *really* worth spending £500 on? But at the end of the day it's your money.....

Why not invest in a new lens instead?

Can get the canon 17-55 f2.8 in your budget and should make a difference for you over your kit lens. Or a 35/85 1.8 prime? Could even get the 70-200 f4l non is.

And upgrade is always to something you want, not just away from something you're bored with.

Until you identify what you want, you're unlikely to be satisfied with anything you get.

I must agree with Stewart, if you dont feel there is a need to upgrade the body you are just wasting money, if you want to do that I will take the £500 off you or whatever. haha

... as all the shopping addicts continue to clamour 'Get this, get that!'.

Wait until you encounter a problem that requires a new camera body. If you don't then when that time eventually comes you'll just be annoyed that you'd earlier blown money on a pointless upgrade.

If nothing about your camera is holding you back and you want to make improvements to your image quality then upgrade your lenses, not your camera.

On the other hand, if you just WANT something new and have the money then there's nothing wrong with that but just be aware of why it is you're buying something.

Hell, 99.9% of people on this forum don't need the kit they have but that doesn't stop us and having it makes us feel better.

Thanks everyone this was somewhat helpful :)

ive decided on a new camera body and i will still have enough for a new lens.

dont do this to me lol now im going to be torn between the 1d mk 3 and the 7d mk1 lol

Have you ever thought about going to a Full Frame Camera body at all? The picture quality difference can be spectacular. And some of the earlier 1ds Canon's can be had for a song nowadays. They're built like tanks too, lol.

Come on Aaron, you have said, "To be honest i dont feel my 350d is holding me back", so why are you thinking about buying a new camera?

I have always wanted a second camera and i figured while i have the money and its coming up to christmas i may aswell treat myself :) after reading all these posts i have been thinking should i buy a new camera body or should i just buy new lenses

Yeah i have thought about a full frame camera body , i just dont have the cash for one at the moment lol might just wait until i have enough and get one (been thinking about either a new camera body or new lenses) just going to wait and see what i can afford

Lots of us want an upgrade, few need one. Nothing wrong with either. Certainly no need to have to justify it to us, we know where your coming from.

What I've said a 100 times:
Beginners think it's about cameras
Enthusiasts think it's about lenses
Photographers know it's all about light.

In short, if you want to spend some money to improve your photography, get some training, then you'll realise what's holding you back, then you can improve the gear to make a real difference.

Personally I think Phils and StewartR are right because you never really answered the question, what's wrong with your current camera?, other than the fact that you've got money burning a hole in your pocket, then you say you mainly take portraits, but the 2 camera bodies you've highlighted are sports cameras, the canon 5D would suit your needs much better than either the 1D MKIII or 7D for portrait photography, but I think you really don't know what you want and why. You really need to understand what's lacking in you photography at the moment. Why not post some images and explain why you're not happy with the results.

If you feel your body is lacking something then by all means upgrade. But dont if you feel your camera is old of past it. I love to see good shots and then notice its from an old body. The reason i upgraded was more to do with the lack of controls on the body and poor resolution lcd than anything else.
