Hi,
Another general question on upgrading... any opinion will be much appreciated so thanks in advance.
I have this thought of upgrading my camera body but I am not sure if I should go for 7D or a full frame body. The reason being I want to cut down the amount of lens I have at the moment and put the money towards a better camera body or change to a full frame body with 1 or 2 good lens.
Currently I have a 550D with just one L lens and the rest are the usual mix of budget Sigma and Canon.

I take up photography only as a hobby.
Thanks.:)

What do you photograph?

If you need speed, the 7D will be best. If you don't need speed, a 5DMkII or classic will get you better image quality.

What are your other lenses? How many of them are EF-s or Sigma DC?

Hi TJ

This poses so many questions: You will be asked what the limitations of your 550 are ? What you shoot ? What kind of budget you have ? Why invest in cams when glass is the way to go etc....

Obviously, you have some good experience in the field of photography and, I suspect, only you can answer the question in the title line.

FWIW, I think a 7D or 5D2 (or any one of a long list of other cams) provide fantastic inages. Maybe the best thing to do is to ask what you would like to achieve that you are not doing currently then address whatever is limiting you. For example, if you do wildlife, the increased fps or AF mechanism of the 7D may get you better BIF images, wheras, if you shoot events a 5D2 will give higher iso ability and better pictures. Alternatively, if you spend on a 85L you will be able to produce fantastic portraits.

Sorry, I'm sure I've not answered your question.

Look forward to fiollowing this thread.

Hi Adam - Thanks.
I do like landscape so I got the Sigma 10-20. The rest are Sigma 28mm, 30mm, the nifty fifty and the 17-55 as my walkabout lens. I find I dont use the prime lens a lot. When I don't have then I want them and when I got then I find I just can't find much use for them.

Hi Gary - Thanks.
I plan to sell some lens and the camera to fund any further purchase. I don't shoot event but somehow full frame is an attractive appeal to me.

Well the 5D MkII is one of the best landscape cameras available.

If you can afford a 5DmkII, 24-105L and 17-40L, that's got you covered for landscapes and 'walk about'. Or, alternatively there is the sigma 12-24mm. IQ won't be quite as good as the canon, but it's incredibly wide.

Will your budget stretch that far?

Or alternatively, you could invest in more lenses for your 550D. Are there any lenses you have a hankering for? I don't think you'd see much of an advantage from a 7D for landscapes. It's the same sensor as the 550D, so IQ will be the same. The improvements and in AF performance, fps speed and handling (more buttons, bigger grip).

The best price I can find for a 5DmkII + 24-105L set up off camerapricebuster is £2,187. I suppose I can only afford only that if I sell off everything from the current set up + top up. Gee... got to think hard about it.

Or you could spend it on going fabulous places with you current gear.

Selling off some lens and go to some place warm for a holiday. That's a good idea too :)

Owning a 28 and 30mm doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

If the 28mm is a f1.8 it might be worth thinking about selling the 30mm (asuming this is the APS-C only f1.4?) Selling this will put some money in your pocket and give you a bit more time to think about future options and deciding if you are sticking with APS-C or going full frame.

Yes, the 28mm is a 1.8 and the 30mm a 1.4. Perhaps I can just get a 24-70 or a 24-105 first then decide on the body in the future. Hmm...

Given your commments above I'd like to +1 for the 5D2+24-105L combination.

This set-up has limitations but for allround versatility is v.hard to beat.

You can always add specialist lenses as and when required.

Specifically, for landscapes, adding the 17-40 makes a lot of sense too.

Maybe buying used is one way to go ?

Good luck with your selections.

Gary,
Thanks for the suggestion. It sounds ideal :)
Guess I got to start calculating and see how much £ I can gather before taking anything forward.

i have to say a 5D classic is well up there in the type of photography you are talking about, and at around £550-£650 there a bargain.

tried the 5DII don't do video so left it. IQ very similar to 5D

tried the 1Ds II very little difference only shoot fair weather.IQ very similar to 5D

plumped for 5D classic and a 1DIIn the bigger screen did it for me than on the 1DII

both mint for under the price of a 5DII.

and some ££ left of nice L's

Thanks Merc, for your suggestion. I find I don't use the vid function on my 550D, preferring to use a compact for that.

Hi Darren, hope you will get it soon.

I got a 7D. Very happy with it and is still learning how to use it properly. Thank you all. Now I have a 550D body and a 18-135mm for sale. Who wants it. LOL. I'll start a thread soon.
