Not to sure? I really like the 50D

few questions I have a 400 EOS. Was wondering i could use my lenses with any of those cameras :)

You can use all of your lenses, no problem.

50D is a good upgrade. It should hold value slightly better and last longer, as well as perform better. The price difference is too small to justify 500D (video is no good in it anyway)

50D. Better camera. Besides, you will know that you have upgraded the moment you hold 50D in your hand (coming from a small size 400D) :naughty:

50D all the way, but a lot of people still think the 40D is better

I upgraded from a 400D to 40D a while back. The improvement was astonishing, the viewfinder alone is a dream by comparison. 40D or 50D, you'll love either.

50D for me too, no question. You have a 400D so I assume you looking for increased performance and features, so the 50D would be perfect (or a 40D).

AS soon as you hold the 50D in your hands, you'll never look back at your 400D in the same way. I'm certain the 500D has similar dimensions to the 400D

50d is superior to 400d (500d too) as it has usable weathersealing (not pro series but pretty good). The body is heavier and more stable. The high iso is usable. The screen is heavenly. It's AF is miles ahead of a 400d's - I know you shoot a lot of horses.

Just get the 50 :D

one of our other Glaswegian members might stand you a 40/50d to play with (same size near as dammedy)

My friend has one for sale but i wasn't sure atm- i regret not buying it, the think is i need to do a pay monthly as i cant afford nearly 1,000 +. and i dont think my parents would either since they payed alot for the 400D 2 years ago

I see Warehouse Express do it, So i was thinking that and a good lens :) but i'm not sure i might save up for the lens and just get the body. And get a 2nd hand lens or what.

But i really want to upgrade if I'm going to take this seriously.

50D. Although Canon are trying to get the 500D away from the 'entry-level' brand name, in my opinion xxxD will always be entry-level as the xxD will always be designed at more semi-professional photographers. At the moment the 500D looks good, but when the next xxD (60D?) gets released it'll make the 500D entry-level again. That's my opinion anyway.

Basically, if you're planning on taking photography a bit more seriously go for the 50D. If you like the 400D in terms of size, would like to continue how you are and wouldn't mind video then get the 500D.

For me, it's 50D every time (hence owning one after the 500D was released).

I had (or still have kept) a 400D and recently upgraded to the 50D just as the 500D became available. Haven't looked back. The 50D is bloody amazing and the results are brilliant. Even the screen on the back is a massive improvement. Go for it and pay that little bit more and ou won't regret it.

I personally wouldn't consider the 500D to be an upgrade, it is still a xxxD. My understanding of the Canon numbering system is that the xxxD are entry level and the xxD is prosumer.

Yes the 500D may be an upgrade by virtue of changing technology, but for me the 40D / 50D would be a true upgrade from entry level to prosumer.

I would. I considered the 450D an upgrade (over the 400D). Higher MP, Live View, Auto ISO, 3" screen and so on... The 500D has video, even higher MP, better ISO control and so on. All useful stuff to have.

Agreed - I upgraded from a 400D to a 450D last year as I wanted Live View & Spot Metering in particular. I couldn't justify another £150 on top for an arguably better camera (40D), but I definitely 'upgraded'.

I'd go 40D or 50D that said - video holds no interest to me.

Have you been to a local camera shop and had a feel / play around with both, as has been said the 40 / 50 is a different camera to the 500 in size and weight as well.

I upgraded from a 300 to a 40 and have not looked back

Good luck with your search :)

Just looked in your kit bag and your glass really isn't that hot, and could make a bigger difference than a body to your photography....

have you considered a 40d as its a very good camera in its own right and is that bit cheaper as you say budget is limited

50d is classed as an upgrade IMO, 500d is classed as a newer beginners model.

So getting a 500d over a 400d i wouldn't see as an upgrade.

I'd probably look on the 500D as an update - more up to date version of what you've already got. The 50D would be an upgrade - not only more up to date functions/facilities, but far better build quality, just feels more solid somehow!
