I bought Mac OSX Snow Leopard when it was released but have yet to load it. I'm running OSX 10.5.8 at the moment. I just think that while everything is running smoothly I should leave well alone!

So I think the time has come to bite the bullet and load it on. Do I just pop it in my machine and let it get on with it or do i need to do anything 1st? I have backed up my important files but have no idea where Entourage keeps my email data, anyone know? I would like to save this and firefox history/settings before I go ahead.

Will i notice any difference?

Any help appreciated

Is your machine running better? I think Snow Leopard does something to make good use of the core 2 processor.....if you have one!

It is a complicated issue. It IS best to do a full clean install but you really do need to make sure that you have a full WORKING backup.

What would be absolutely ideal would be to buy a firewire case and a new spangley fast hard drive. Stick the new drive into the iMac and stick the old one into the firewire case. You will then be able to do a full clean install and restore all you user settings from the NOW external drive.

Snow Leopard is better than Leopard but it is not the massive jump that Leopard was from Tiger or W7 was from Vista. If you check out my tips you might find some of them useful.

  • Repair Disk and Repair Permissions in Disk Utility
  • Back up
  • Do an Archive and Install upgrade (although ISTR that's not an option in the 10.6 installer)

Has worked for me well enough over the last ten years on OS X since the first public beta with many, many Macs. I rarely have time to to a full reinstall on every computer at work for system upgrades.

edit: you will notice that you have a fair bit more hard drive space after the upgrade as the old code for PPC Macs is no longer there.

There are a lot of little details to enjoy in 10.6. I like the slider in the Finder to change the size of icons in a window without having to go to the View > Show View Options menu.

I don't like that GPGMail no longer works on 10.6, but this may not bother most people.

futher edit: Seems it's finally been updated!
