Ok guys/gals in the next few weeks im upgrading to a canon 5d mk11 and a few lens but which lens do i buy, i would like to cover most eventualities with maybe 3-4 lens, so peeps whats your idea of a good set up? i shoot everything from landscapes, portraits, aviation ect

Thanks Andy

I've just gone full frame too and I reckon the thing to do is a UWA zoom, a normal lens and a 70-200 f2.8 + TC. Don't know how that translates to Canon lenses though.

That said, the Nikon UWA lenses are pretty expensive so I might get a 20 or 24mm prime in the meantime.

17-40L
24-105L (or the 24-70L 2.8 if you need 2.8)
50mm 1.4 Sigma
70-200 Canon (4L, 4L IS, 2.8L or 2.8L IS depending on budget)
100-400L if you have the funds and need longer range.

Done! Add a Marcro if that is your thing.

35 1.4
50 1.4
85 1.8
100-400 (for aviation)

+1 :) I don't do UWA or aviation/birds, but would agree with the above

Maybe consider Canon 1.4 though

Other then the sigma, thats my setup, seems to cover everything i need

I sort of came the other way!

I was trying to avoid the cost of a DSLR so held onto my 35mm bodies as long as possible, so made sure that all lenses were suitable for those - and hence for Fx Digital as well.

My main lens line up is now Sigma (S) 12-24;
(S) 24-70;
Nikon 70-300 VR (or (S) 70-200 if I think I need or want the extra stops)
and a (S) 150-500 if I think I need the extra reach.

I have a small selection of primes as well - 50mm f/1.8, 90mm f/2.8 Macro and a 180mm f/2.8 but they usually stay at home since I have the lengths covered by the 3 main zooms but of course, if I think I'll need what the zooms can't offer, I'll grab a prime.

I've just gone FF too - pondering my next move with lenses.

Currently have a 24-105mm and a 100-400mm. Just trying to decide whether to go for a 17-40 or 24-70 for landscape work :)

But I think the suggestion mentioned by dubcat is spot on if you've the funds :)

I would suggest:
Wide zoom - 17-40mm
Fast prime - 50mm f1.4 (take your pick) or 35mm?
Mid tele - 70-200 again, take your pick
Long tele - 100-400

I'm in the same boat. Currently have a crop but trying to get my lenses together before going full frame. So far ive collected 17-40mm L, 50mm 1.8 and 70-200 f4L. I think that should suffice for going full frame etc.

I made a concious decision to get those based on asking the very same question as you have.

Now just to seel my EF-S lens (10-22) and kit lens before buying one more lens and then a full frame body

Ive just gone FF and bought a Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and its bloody brilliant! Used it on holiday recently for over 800 pictures and got back and have been simply amazed by the quality - it is RAZOR sharp even wide open!! And f2.8 is a great thing to have. FF + f2.8 gives some really nice effects IMO - subject isolation is very easy indeed.

I have the cheaper 70-300 IS USM telephoto lens and tbh Im pretty impressed with it! Only taken a few photos but found it hard to decide between the 70-200 F4 L and this.... in the end having the IS was more important to me, and it was around £200 cheaper. Reviews say it is slightly soft from 250-300mm but the 70-200 F4 doesnt even zoom this far, so I think its fair enough!

Might consider getting the 70-200 F4 L at a later date, but will use it alongside the 70-300 IS.
The 50mm 1.8 is pretty good lens on FF too, as is the 85mm 1.8/1.4

If the budget will stretch to it

5DII
16-35 2.8 L II
24-70 2.8 L
70-200 2.8 II IS L

And either a 2x TC or 100-400 L IS 4/5.6

Thats a bag that will cover you from the Landscape to Safari. and everything in between

(Then of course you will want to add the 100 L IS Macro a 580EX II or 2), a spare 5DII Body for backup

Darn this FF marlarky gets expensive!!

I have 24/70 2.8L, 70/200 F4 IS L and a 1.4 converter (mk2 Canon for the 70/200) covers most things. For portrait work I use my 85 1.8, although I also have 50 1.8 and a 100 2.8 macro, the 85 can be used with tubes and makes a fine macro lens and the 100 macro makes a fine portrait lens, so I have doubled-up a bit there. For me 24mm is wide enough, although I do have a 10/30 Sigma too that I sometimes use. I mainly bought it to go on the wife's 50D but I knew it would also work on my FF body.
Without knowing your budget its hard to be specific.
I'd get probably two lenses then see what else you need/want.

24-70 and 70-200 probably covers me for 85-90% of my photography. Also have a 100-400 for sport, and a nifty fifty because it was cheap. Will probably add something like a 17-40 to increase the coverage at the wide end that I am currently lacking.

If I had to keep just 4 lens, they would be...

Sigma 12-24
Canon 24-105L
50mm f1.8
Canon 100-400L

I also have

17-40L
300mm f2.8L
1.4x II & 2x II Convertors

:plusone: yep don't beat around the bush, the three 2.8 zooms and then your choices of very good primes at 24,35,50,85,135mm.

I went FF earlier in the year and ended up with...

Sigma 12-24
Tamron 28-75
Canon 35-350 L
Canon 300 2.8 L with a 1.4 and 2x TC
Sigma 180 macro

Still on the wish list is a Siggy 50 1.4!

So if you hear of one at a bargain price....!
